!I [Cindy Schroeder] match Jimmy Dean Wade at the 4th to remote DNA cousin level and also match with Mary Frances Wade/Harrell. Because of this, I believe this Elijah [my ancestor] of Surry and Wilkes Counties, NC, is the Elijah [son of George and Jemima] in spite of the conclusion of Hugh and Margaret Oliver written below. Jimmy is a descendant of George and Jemima Oliver through 2 or 3 of his lines (down from their son John) that intermarried. I am his 6th cousin once removed, but probably because of his double/triple Oliver ancestry we match at a closer level. [22]

! Scotch-Irish [1-2,6] Religion: Presbyterian [2,12] Captain in Revolutionary War [1,6]

!Hugh and Margaret Oliver did extensive research on Elijah Oliver, son of George, reported in their book. "Because he is not named in the 1824 suit by Thomas Searcy to Quiet Title to the George Oliver lands, we assume he is dead. At this time absolutely nothing more could be found on him... However, it is possible he could have married and raised a large family without ever appearing in a deed, court minute or census record... Yet, all we have is that he was named Elijah, born about 1748-50, living in George Oliver's home community as late as 1784, and later named one of George's sons in 1801." Their research concluded that the Elijah Oliver of Surry Co. NC is not this Elijah because "his death in 1789 rule him out as Elijah Oliver of Rockingham County, North Carolina, son of George Oliver (1726-1786)... However, his migration from Prince Edward County, Virginia in 1778, coupled with the coincidence of his name and dates, suggests a family relationship." They assumed the Elijah of Surry Co. NC died in about 1789 based on circumstantial evidence. The mystery is that he is named as an heir of George in 1799/1801 but does not appear to make a claim of inheritance. Susannah is the head of Elijah's household in 1790 and 1800, which would indicate that Elijah was deceased. From the Oliver book: August Term 1799 "George Oliver vs. Mary Oliver of the Heirs of George Oliver, Deceased... It appearing to the satisfaction of the court that Elijah Oliver one of the heirs of George Oliver, Deceased is inhabitant of this State. It is therefore ordered by the Court that the said Elijah Oliver appear at the next County Court of Rockingham on the Fourth Monday next and answer the Petition of George Oliver, otherwise the Petition will be taken proconfesso against him and this ordered published in some newspaper of this State... May, August, November Terms 1801 and February and May Terms 1802, Office vs. George Oliver heirs - nothing found... The inference from this is that Elijah was (1) a principle heir involved; (2) he was residing in the State, but apparently not in a nearby county; and (3) the Court was not able to attach his property or the property of the other heirs to satisfy a judgement apparently rendered against them by the Court in favor of the plaintiff, George Oliver, Jr... No census record lists an Elijah Oliver who could be this man except possible in adjoining Surry County in 1810 (Note: this is the man I [CAS] believe to be Ahijah Oliver.) Our search for him extended to all the counties of North Carolina and into Virginia, South Carolina and Tennessee... One man named Elijah Oliver lived in South Carolina in this time period, but his family did not match the Rockingham County, North Carolina Olivers." (See below from Winnie Gilreath Westbury.) The only known possibility I [CAS] can think of would be that he disappeared about 1789, but was not confirmed dead. Of course the other possibility is that these were two different Elijahs that lived at the same time. I believe the two are one man. [CAS] Elijah, son of George, was given a division of the estate in 1801. No more is mentioned of Elijah. [CAS,21] ---------------------- Colonel Hugh R. Oliver's book pointed out that the division of George Oliver's land in Rowan County involved a newspaper notice in 1799 and a lottery in 1801, both naming Elijah Oliver, Sr. Therefore, he assumed that Elijah could not be the same Elijah who was already deceased. But neither the newspaper advertisement nor the lottery indicated that the whereabouts of Elijah was known or that he actively participated in the lottery. I would argue that either the Oliver family did not know that he was deceased or that it did not matter, that the inclusion of his name was a mere legal formality to bring forth any claims by his heirs. [23]

!Rowan Co. NC Court Minutes [10,21,23] (later became Guilford Co. and then Rockingham Co. in 1785) 13 FEB 1769 Elija Oliver is listed on a petition to build a merchant mill on Hoganses Creek near Dann..." This petition also included his father's name and neighbors. (Age 21 or over to be listed). From Oliver book: "Lack of other records for Elijah during this period indicate he may have been unmarried, living at home with his parents."

!Elijah Oliver (no county given) RW Heirs were given by state of NC military warrant for 640 acres of land in what is now Davidson Co. TN. File Jacket #58, Military warrant #1418 File Jacket #770, Military warrant #1419, land grant #743 Based on service of 84 months as private in the Continental Line of NC - RW. The warrant for the land was sold and assigned to James Sanders and signed on the back by John Oliver. Dated 18 NOV ____(not decipherable). Land survey show two dates 1 MAR 1786 and 4 APR 1786. So this Elijah Oliver appears to have died prior to 18 NOV 1785 at the latest. [?] --------- Roster of Soldiers from NC in Am. Rev. [443] pg.262 #1418 The heir of Elijah Olliver, Privt., 640 acres, 86 months service, deeded to Major Donohoe [24]

!Before his death, apparently in the 1780's Elijah Sr. owned land in Georgia, as proven by later deeds involving his sons, Elijah Jr. and John. This land in Georgia may have been for military service as indicated in the following records [23] 1) Oglethorpe, GA, 1785-88 Elijah Oliver of NC buys 200 acres from James McComan of Wilkes Co. GA, Beaverdam Waters, branch of Broad River 2) In 1793 Robert Loony of Pendleton, S. C., had a power of attorney from Elijah Oliver. In 1795 and 1797 he sold land on the waters of the Tugaloo River, some of which had been granted in 1784. Much land here was granted for military service.

!I believe one of these Elijah's is ours born about 1748. [CAS] 1790 Census: Pendleton, SC (note: power of attorney above in 1793 was from Pendleton) Elijah Oliver 1M 16+ (living alone - no other Olivers listed) 1790 Census: Greenville, SC Elijah Olliver 1M 16+ 2F Pleasant Hudson next listed Winnie Gilreath Westbury wondered if the Elijah Oliver on the 1790 Greenville Co. SC census could be this Elijah based on the following from her. [NOTE: If this is the same Elijah it means that he left his family in NC and (based on census record) married again and had a daughter by 1790 OR he left his wife in NC with some of the children and two daughters moved with him to SC. In 1790 in SC, Elijah Oliver is listed next to Pleasant Hudson. In 1834 Pleasant Hudson is a member of a church whose pastor in the 1790s was quite possibly the Lewis Rector of Surry/Wilkes Co. NC. It is apparent that these families had a Surry/Wilkes Co. NC connection. (CAS)] From Winnie - Winnie has a few notes on Elijah OLIVER citing jury duty in Wilkes Co NC--at the same time that William GILREATH was a juror there. William GILREATH d 1794 SC: two of his sons are in Greenville Co SC by 1800 census. They were in the area of Milford Church or South Tyger River. This Elijah OLIVER of 1790 census in Greenville Co SC is enumerated near Pleasant HUDSON. Pleasant HUDSON is mentioned in a plat for Joseph WOODALL. This plat also mentions Reuben SMITH. Reuben SMITH's grandson married Martha GILREATH granddaughter of William GILREATH (d 1835 Wilkes Co NC). [20] -------------- More notes on the above found on the internet by CAS. William Gilreath [15] Born: Abt 1730, Craven County (later Bute, now Warren), North Carolina Province, Colonial America 4 Marriage: Mary Arrington about 1751 in Granville County, North Carolina Died: Between 2 Oct 1794 and 6 May 1795, Newberry County, South Carolina about age 64 4 He moved from Bute County to Surry County, North Carolina in 1776. Wilkes County was formed from Surry County in 1777. • He received a land grant on 15 Dec 1778 for 150 acres on the Little Fork of Cub Creek in Wilkes County, NC. Grant #24, entry #348 4 • He received a land grant on 15 Dec 1778 for 150 acres of land on both sides of the little fork of Cub Creek adjoining James Wilson and John Pitman. Warrant/Entry #349 was dated 15 Dec 1778. Grant #24 dated 3 Mar 1779 was recorded in book 39, page 24. Chain carriers: Alexander Gilreath & John Vickers Surveyer: Jos. Herndon • He served in and was said to have been a wagoneer during the American Revolution. • He was included on the 1782 tax list for Wilkes County, North Carolina Province, Colonial America. The entry showed him with 250 acres, 5 mules, 11 cattle, and no slaves. • He received a land grant on 22 Sep 1785 for "200 acres of land on the middle fork of the Little Cub Creek at ford where Montgomery's old path crosses.". North Carolina Grant No. 628 • He moved to Newberry, South Carolina with his wife Mary and their four youngest children in 1787. ---------------- Pleasant Hudson [16-17] In OCT 1834, Pleasant and Sally Hudson were members of Brushy Creek Baptist Church in Greenville Co. SC. Pleasant Hudson was born in 1766. He married Sarah Kemp. Pleasant Hudson died in 1841. [NOTE: George Oliver, father of Elijah, had another son, Abraham. Abraham had a son named Pleasant H. Oliver born 1800. Maybe named after Pleasant Hudson, but more probably named after neighbor Pleasant Henderson.] ---------------- Lewis Rector -- A Lewis Rector who married Elizabeth Green, daughter of George Green and Elizabeth Underwood was living in Greenville County, SC around 1792. He apparently returned to VA for some period of time. The marriage bond for Lewis and Elizabeth is recorded in Fauquier Co., VA. He is again in Greenville County by 1795 when he (1) purchases land and (2) is named pastor of Brushy Creek Baptist Church. Greenville County, SC and Buncombe County, NC are fairly close to each other. The distance between Greenville and Ashville is about 55 miles. The Buncombe road passed near Lewis Rector's property and near the churches he pastored. It is still called the Buncombe Road today (not to be confused with the Old Buncombe Road). [19] NOTE: Maybe Ms. Matson was wrong and the other (probably older) Lewis Rector mentioned below was the pastor at Brushy Creek? That would explain the marriage in VA. From Ancestry family trees I found that the Lewis Rector married to Elizabeth Green was born 1772. This Lewis died in 1827 in Greenville, SC. [CAS] A different Lewis Rector-- RW pension file - The date and place of birth of Lewis Rector are not shown, nor are the names of either of his parents designated. Lewis Rector enlisted in Surry County, NC, in May, 1782, served as a private in Captain Sharp's Company, under Colonels Armstrong and Archibald Lytle in the NC Troops and was discharged in 1783, having served 18 months. After the war, he lived in Wilkes, Iredell, and Buncombe Counties, NC. He resided in Buncombe County, NC, where he died January 30, 1844. The soldier married in December 1788, Frances Lunsford. They were married at the home of John Rector, in Wilkes county, NC. Relationship of John Rector to the soldier, Lewis Rector, was not shown. His widow Frances survived him. [18] NOTE: From Ancestry Family trees I found that this Lewis was the son of John Rector and Elizabeth Redding of Fauquier Co. VA.
