Biography

Christened 2 February 1862 at Biddenden. In 1871 he was living with his parents at Little Lashenden, Biddenden, Kent, aged 9. At 19, he was a grocer's assistant at Coxheath. In 1886 he married Leah Hawkes, a daughter of a grocer and farmer at Eccles, Aylesford, and by 1891, he was himself the grocer at Varnes Street, Eccles, with his wife Leah and son Hubert. His sister Elizabeth, 14, was also living there as a Post Office clerk, and he is also shown at his grocer's shop and Post Office in the censuses of 1901 (Cork Street) and 1911. (Cork Street, Varnes Street, Alma Road and Bull Lane form a square.) After the death of Leah in 1926, he married Evelyn Louisa Clare in the Maidstone district (which includes Aylesford) in 1935. The marriage record calls her simply Evelyn Clare, but the 1939 census shows William H. Oliver born 1862 and Evelyn L. Oliver born 1886 together in Maidstone Borough. Evelyn was born at Southgate, Middlesex (now London) in 1886, christened at Edmonton in 1887, and died at Canterbury 1981.
