Biography

Birth registered July-Sept. 1850 at Tenterden, christened on 3rd November 1850 at High Halden. James was a farm labourer all his working life. He was recorded in censuses living with his parents and siblings at High Halden in 1851 (0 years old), 1861 (10), and 1871 (20). He married Ann Maria Buss in 1872. He seems to have extended his age from here on, as in the following censuses, all at Bethersden: 1881 (31), 1891 (42), 1901 (54), 1911 (65). His residence at Bethersden was shown to be in 'Bateman Lane' in 1881 and 1891. Their children were: Emily Adelaide 1874-1961, married John Henry Kingsnorth and had five children; Sarah Ann 1878-1916, married Benjamin Drury and had at least three daughters; John Charles Edward 1882-1964, married Kate Buckman and had six children.
