Henry Olliver was born in New South Wales, Australia

Henry Olliver[1][2] was also known as Harry.[3] He may have been born on 11 March 1851 in Gunning, New South Wales.[4][5][6] He may have been born on 11 March 1852 in Goulburn, New South Wales.[7]

At 19 years of age Henry travelled around the country as a shearer. His travels took him west as far as Hillston. He also worked in a store at Euablong in New South Wales. In the winter of 1870 he took up droving and travelled from the Lachlan to Bendigo and Melbourne. Later than year he was back in Forbes working as a blacksmith for Charles Ray, where he met his future wife.[8][9] He arrived in Bushman's Lead, New South Wales, circa 1871 after not liking the seperation from Mary.[10][11]

He married Mary Jane Nicholson, daughter of Donald Nicholson and Margaret Brown, in a Presbyterian ceremony in her father's house on Sunday 8 September 1872 in Bushman's Lead, New South Wales. He was 21 and his wife Mary was 20. Mary's father was a carpenter from Scotland. The wedding certificate was also signed by Susannah Alletta Nicholson and B. Joseph Sutherland. Mary and Henry went on to have 10 children together.[12] At this time his occupation was given as a blacksmith.[13] Later he bought a blacksmith's shop from a Mr. Sutherland (most likely his wife's sister's husband) and he made sulkies, carts, wheels and drays in Parkes. He later moved his business to Dalton Street. For 9 years he also acted as a contractor for the Bogan Gate Mail.[14] He witnessed his wife's nephew James John Bourke's burial on 19 May 1876 Goobang Creek cemetery in Parkes, New South Wales. No Minister attended the burial.[15] Henry provided information on the death of his father William Olliver, on 1 January 1886, in Forbes, New South Wales, \-33.39000,148.009000, aged 34.[16] Henry (and presumably his spouse Mary) lived circa 1889 in Victoria Street, in Parkes, New South Wales, \-33.137000,148.174000. Henry and Mary were to remain there for another 45 years (after having lived in three other houses in town).[17][18] Henry sold his blacksmith business to his son William and his brother Arthur. the partnership was not a favourable one so William sold his share to his Uncle Arthur and started his own blacksmith business in Trundle, New South Wales.[19] He and Mary Jane Nicholson celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary on 8 September 1932.

Mary was memorialised in an obituary on 8 October 1934: " ...Of a deeply religious nature Mrs. Olliver attended the Presbyterian Church regularly until recently, and brought her family, to whom she was devoted, up in a way which made, them honored throughout the district. The family, of whom two are deceased, is as follows: William (Dundas), Margaret (Mrs. F. P. Goudge, of Parkes), Alexandria (Mrs. A. McDougall, Sans Souci), Hughie (New Zealand), Arthur (Sans Souci), James (Bondi), Hilton (New Zealand) and Jack (Young). There are also 30 grandchildren and 17 great, grand children.[20] Henry lived in 1938 in at 848 Rocky Point Road in the Sydney suburb of Kogarah.[21]

Henry died on 11 April 1938 in the Sydney suburb of Kogarah aged 87 of pneumonia.[22][23] He was buried on 12 April 1938 in Church of England cemetery, in Parkes, New South Wales, \-33.136545,148.191229.[24]

MRS. MARY OLLIVER. One of Parkes' pioneer ladies, Mrs. Mary Olliver, wife of Mr. Harry Olliver, of Victoria-street, passed away in her home early on Tuesday morning, following a short illness, at the age of 82 years. Born in Yass, Mrs. Olliver came to Parkes in 1871, just after gold had been discovered, and the town, then known as. 'The Bushman's Lead,' consisted of a butcher's shop, a bakery and a few houses which the hardy pioneers had constructed from the timber around them. In 1872 she was married to Mr. Olliver who had also recently arrived in the town, and together they set about making a living following farming pursuits in the district. Mr. Olliver was able to build a comfortable home in Victoria-street in 1889, and they, have resided there ever since. Of a deeply religious nature Mrs. There are also 30 grandchildren and 17 great, grand children. There was a special service at the Presbyterian Church, on Tuesday afternoon, when the Rev. H. S. Bunn gave a brief, but very fine address. At 3 o'clock the funeral cortege moved off to the cemetery where the Rev. Bunn again officiated. Deep sympathy is felt for the family and the aged widower in their loss of one of whom it could truly be said, 'She was one of God's good women.' — 'Champion-Post.' Many friends in this district extend their sympathy to Mrs. McDougall and Mr. J. Olliver").
