Biography

"(12) SAMUEL OLMSTED, b. at Hartford, Conn., 1653; d. at E. Haddam, Conn., Jan. 13, 1726; m. Mary Lord; b. at E. Haddam, Conn., May, 1649; d. Sept. 14, 1736; dau. of William Lord, of Saybrook, Conn.
18, Samuel +. 19, John +. 20, Sarah; b. at Hartford, Conn.; m. Jared Cone; b. Jan. 7, 1668; d. Apr. 11, 1718; son of Daniel and Mahitabel (Spencer) Cone, of Haddam, Conn. 21, Elizabeth; b. 1688; bap. Aug. 7, 1692; d. Dec. 22, 1749 or 1761; m. Feb. 5, 1707, John Church; d. Mar. 21, 1757. Both Samuel Olmsted and his wife are buried in the Cone cemetery, East Haddam, Ct. Samuel's gravestone has this inscription: " Samuel Olmsted, son of Capt. Nicholas in Hartford, being ye first of that name who came to that place who deceased Jan. 13, 1726 in ye 73rd year of his age." He settled in East Haddam as early as 1713.
Lyme, Ct., land records show deeds, Nov. 13, 1695, Samuel Olmsted of "Haddome " to " my brother " Richard Lord, of Lyme, also to " my brother John Colt, of Lyme, conveying to each one half of his dwelling house and orchard in Lyme.
The same records show a deed, June 19, 1684, from William Lord, Robert Lord and Thomas Lord to " Samuel Omsted our Brother in Law, land on Tantomoheagehill." On the same page a deed was recorded from Olmsted to " my brother," John Colt, of Lyme, dated Nov. 13, 1695, and acknowledged in Haddam, March 5, 1720. On the following page is a receipt from Olmsted for his full share of the estate of " his brother," Joseph Lord."[1]

Marriage

Samuel Olmsted married Mary Lord, daughter of William Lord, in 1649. They had four known children.[2]

Will

Died 13 January, 1726. Inventory taken by Joshua Brainard, Isaac Spencer and Samuel Emmons. Court Record, Page 129--5 May, 1726: Adms. to Mary Olmsted, widow, and John Olmsted, son of sd. decd. Recog., œ300, with Samuel Olmsted. Page 131--3 June, 1726: John Olmsted, Adms. on the estate of Samuel Olmsted, late of Haddam decd., exhibited an account of Adms. of the estate: Paid in debts and charges, œ16-08-09; the inventory, with addition, œ580-13-04; subtracting œ16-08-09, there remains œ564-04-07 to be dist. Order: To Mary Olmsted, widow, œ78-05-02 with dower; to Samuel Olmsted, eldest son, œ2-18-00 with what he has received of his father's estate (œ452-11-03), which is his double portion; to John, 2nd son, œ79-15-00, he having formerly received œ148; to Sarah Cone, eldest daughter, œ202-14-11, she having formerly received œ25-01-00. To Elizabeth Church, another daughter, œ200-10-09, she having formerly received œ27-04-03; which, with what they have respectively received, is their single portion of sd. estate. And appoint Joshua Brainard, Isaac Spencer and Thomas Cone, of Haddam, distributors. Page 122--14 March, 1726-7: John Olmsted, and also the distributors, vizt., Joshua Brainard, Isaac Spencer and Thomas Cone, inform this Court that in sd. dist. therein ordered out of the homested of the decd. (to Sarah Cone œ44-02-07 and to Elizabeth Church œ4-10-07) will much damnify it, and desire that the sd. John may pay the sd. daughters in money and save the homested entire. Allowed.[3]

Samuel died in what is now East Haddam, Middlesex County which was taken off of Hartford County after his death.
