Biography

Jonathan Olmstead, a native of Buffalo, N.Y., settled in Galena, Ill., in 1827. For a time he worked in the lead mines and then moved to Shullsburg, Wi. He served in the Black Hawk War under Capt. Fortunatus Berry in one of the companies of Iowa County of Michigan Territory (now Wisconsin). He enlisted May 19, 1832, & was mustered out on August 20, 1832. Jonathan served alongside a Charles Olmstead (relation unknown). There are questions on where he died whether it was Willow Springs, Wis. or White Oak Springs, south of what is now Shullsburg Wisconsin, in 1834 or after 1845 (acquired 2 tracts of land in WI 1845).

Notes

In 1836 according to undocumented sources. Jonathan's widow (if he died 1845 Asa couldn't have married Jonathan's widow) married her second husband, Asa Hutton, and they settled at Morseville, Jo Daviess County, Ill., the whole vicinity at that time being an unbroken wilderness. Mr. Hutton lived to see the farm brought under a thorough state of cultivation and all the buildings erected. Orange H. Olmstead married Delilah Ensign, who was born at Mesopotamia, Ohio, and to them seven children have been born: William H., Adie, Edward, Cora, Frank E., George L. and Burton E. During the Civil War Mr. Olmstead served as a Union soldier, as a member of Company G. Third Missouri Volunteer Calvary, and in consequence of severe injuries incurred by being thrown from a horse, was mustered out Nov. 12, 1864."
Find out where Nathan belongs the civil war record would make him too young to be Jonathan & there is no record of him being related to Jonathan at this time. There are a Nathan G. (born VT 1807) & a John H. (born Vt 1804) living in Grant County Wisconsin at the same time as Jonathan & Charles.[5]
Olmsteads came from Ohio. Maybe related.

Olmstead-529 and Olmstead-176 appear to represent the same person because: These two are duplicates and need to be merged. Birth location needs to be clarified prior to merge.

Olmstead-529 and Olmstead-176 are not ready to be merged because: New information on the Jabez line that changes some of the relationships in the 3rd and 4th generations is still being worked into WT. I've marked it to make sure that we work on this pair.
