The Olmsted Family Genealogy states that John Olmsted (#9102) of Hanover, N. H., a soldier in the Revolution, married Mary Jackson. His order of birth suggested he was born about 1747. However, John Olmsted who married Mary “Polly” Jackson was actually born about 1774. So, questions remain. Was an older John Olmsted (1747), the son of Israel Olmsted and his first wife Sarah Bannister, confused with his son John (1774)? Or, was the younger John Olmsted (1774) misplaced in the Genealogy and was actually a son of Israel Olmsted and his second wife Anna Safford? The latter is being assumed until some evidence of an older John is discovered.
The DAR does not have any John Olmste(a)ds in their listing of patriot serving during the Rev War.
Is 1747 and 1774 an example of error with the switching positions of the last two of the numbers ?
There is another possibly that there was a son John born 1747 who did participate in the Rev War, and maybe died during that period, and then a "replacement" son, b. 1774, was named John.
John Olmsted was born about 1774 in Lyman, New Hampshire. [1] [2] [3]
He married Mary “Polly” Jackson sometime before 1793 when their first child was born. In 1800, they were in Bradford, Orange County, Vermont. Also, in their household was a male born before 1755. [4]
In 1810 the family was in Norwich, Windsor County, Vermont. [5]
They eventually ended up in Hanover, Grafton County, New Hampshire. The 1820 census for Grafton County is missing but it’s believed they were there before that date. There is an 1818 deed from “Sam’l Holkins” to John Olmsted dated 1818, but it describes John Olmsted as being from Enfield, Hartford, Connecticut. [6] [7]
It's believed John and Polly had 11 or more children. [8]
The family was on the census in Hanover NH on both the 1830 and 1840. Polly died in 1839. [9] [10]
John Olmsted died January 14, 1841. He is buried in the Dartmouth College Cemetery, Hanover, Grafton County, New Hampshire. [11] [12]
