Nils was born in 1818[1][2], the son of indentured soldier Olof Månsson Rolig and his second wife, Elin Nilsdotter.
Nils joined the military as an indentured soldier on the 22nd of November 1835, as part of Skatelöfs Kompani, Kronobergs Regemente, though he later transferred to Liv Kompani[3][4]. He was a musician, and served in the Kronoberg Regimental Band. On 29 Oct 1848 he married Brita Catharina Carlsdotter in the Stads-och-Landfors, Växjö (Vexio) city parish, Kronoberg[5][6]. After leaving the army he served as vakmästere (overseer) to the Växjö town hall. He, his wife and youngest two sons emigrated from Växjö on the 30th of September 1887 to join the rest of their children, who had previously emigrated to Minnesota. They left via Malmö[7] and took ship aboard the SS Island in Copenhagen, arriving in New York on the 31st of October, 1887[8] Nils died, possibly on a visit to his third son Carl's household, in Lindström, Chisago County, MInnesota, and is buried in Union Cemetery, St. Paul[9].
He appears in the husførhörsbok under Vrangkunge (70)
