Hans Olsen of Ytre Smedvik, origin unknown. Hans Olsen was 70 at the time of the Census in 1801 and living with his 2nd wife, Sirie Olsdatter (48).[1] He was recorded as a user at Ytre Smedvik from 1765. In 1763 he was recorded in the tax census as the stepson of Johannes Olsen, so his father must have been dead by then. See notes below.
Hans Olsen must have married Riborg Olsdatter in 1763 or 1764, but the record is not found in protocols from Borge.
The wedding protocol of Hans & Siri (1785) names Hans as a widower of Indre Smedvik and Siri as from Yttre Smedivik.
Military rolls from 1806 records Hans Olsen (72), at Smedvik. His son Christen Hansen (38) and Hans Hansen (17) are also mentioned.[10]He is also in the 1808 roll, but not mentioned in 1811.

Hansen/Hansdatter of Smevig from confirmation records transcribed by Börje Johnson:
Christopher Hansen, Yder Smeviig, confirmation 15 Trinit, 1786
Xsten Hansdr (18), Smeviig, Conf 13 Trinit 1791
Note that there is also a Hans Christophersen living at Smevigen Ytre in 1764-1768. Some of these are his children. HC married Mallena Jacobsdatter.
Hans is listed in the Tax Census from Borge in 1764, 1765 and 1768 as living at Yttre Smevigen with his wife. No children above 12 yr of age are recorded.
Hans Olsen Smewigen, married to Riborg Olsdatter are introduced in Borge Kirke on March 16, 1766. Just below the introduction, is the confirmation of Maren's home-baptism. The passage is hard to read but a possible transcript would be:
Ratificeret et hiemmedøbt barns Daab, nom: Maren; faderen Hans Olsen Smewigen, moderen: Riborg Olsdr. Stiller begge i Kirken vitnende om barnets rigtige hjemmedaab. Det blev giemmedøbt af Johannes Olsen Smewigen, og war tillige owerwærinde Hans Christophersen Smevigen. Fadderne: Kiersten Andersdr Wagle, ba? B: Ingebor Pedersdr Limstranden, Mille Madsdr. Steiro, Esajas Ols. Limstranden, David Olsen ibm.
Mille Madsdatter here, is noted as a girl serving in Smedvik for Hans Christophersen in the census of 1762.
Other mentions:
Another introduction is found in 1775, "Hans Olsen yttre Smævigen and his wife Riborg Olsdatter with bap. boy."[11]
Another mention of Hans Olsen and Ribor Olsdatter is found in 1775.[12]. A possible transcription would be "Kastet Jord paa Hans Olsen yttre Smevigen og Ribor Olsdatters sk?se Dr.B:nom Jon H: 8tDag"
They are introduced again on May 27, 1775 (2dre ) with a little girl.

Tax records
The war tax for 1712 and 1720, and land protocol for 1723 records:[13]
Y. Smevig: Per / Peder Bjørnsen (1712, 1720, 1723), Leilending
Y. Smevig: Hans Rasmussen (1720, 1723), Leilending
Y. Smevig: Johannes Amundsen (1712)
I. Smevig: Aren / Arent / Arne Erlandsen (1712, 1720, 1723), Lejlending
I. Smevig: Albert Jonsen (1720, 1723), Lejlending
At Walle there is a Lejlending named Olle Erichsen in 1712 and 1720, which might be Hans' father. But he is replaced by Johanis Rasmussen in 1723.
At Limstrand, in 1723 there are 3 users:
Anders Andersen
Matz Pedersen
Hans Olsen
A tax record for 1730 is also available, but the database search seems to be broken at the moment, and no scanned pages have been found.[14]
Not many probates are found for Smedvik, but one is recorded in 1732 after Kiersten Albrechtsdatter Walde, who left her husband Johan Rasmussen and her children, Ole Olsen (17), Rasmus Johansen (9), Niels Johansen (5), Karen Olsdatter (14), Margrethe Johannesdatter (2).
Land protocols up to 1760 records a varying number of users at Yttre Smevik:
Hans Olsen
Johan Olsen (1745, 1750, 1755, 1760)
Christopher Michelsen (1750, 1755)
Henrik Rasmussen (1745)
Henrik Jacobsen (1745, 1750)
Hans Cristophersen (1760)
At Indre Smevik we have
Anders Henriksen (1750)
Jacob Andersen (1750, 1755, 1760)
Johannes Samsonsens widow (1750)
Christen Hansen (1755)
Jens Lorentsen (1760)
Church protocols mentions for Smevig (1750 - 1774)

18 Mar 1753: Nedsat Jacob Anders: Smevigens pige barn Ana ?? død kort efter sin daab.
Ellen Andersdatter might be a sister of Beret Andersdatter (~1714 - 1760), the wife of Baltzer Asbjørnsen Valle.
Christen Hansen, m. #1 to Anna Hansdatter (~1715 - 1755), m. #2 on 23 Sep 1756 to Maren Magnusdatter Steiro. 4 children between 1757 and 1764. Moved to Valle in 1762.
Anna Dorothea (bap. 1 Jan 1757)
Johan(nes) Jonsen, m. to Karen Jacobsdatter
Some further notes from the Tax Census 1764-1768. Living at Smevigen Yttre are:[15]
Johan Olsen and his wife, listed as Johannes Olsen, widower, in 1768.
Bereth Olsdatter, stepdaughter of Johan Olsen who is noted as of ill health and a burden to the parents
Niels Christophersen, fosterson, in 1768.
Hans Olsen and his wife, from 1764
Hans Christophersen and wife 1762-1768
Christopher Mikelsen and his wife 1762-1765, wife is noted as old and of ill health in 1764/5. Both are gone in 1768
Johannes Jonsen and wife, from 1768
The tax cencus of 1762/3 names two users at Yttre Smedvik; Johannes Olsen with his wife and stepson Hans Olsen and stepdaughter Beret Olsdatter (date on the first page: 23 Sep 1762).[16] This is consistent with Hans marrying in 1763. This would imply that Hans and Beret are siblings, of a younger generation than Johannes. The farm book mentions that the record from 1743 shows that Johan(nes) Olsen married Kirsten Hansdatter (1707 - 1767, who was the widow of a former user Peder Bjørnsen (abt. 1666 - 1740), formerly married to the widow Lisbeth (d. abt. 1730). A likely father of Hans and Bereth is Ole Christensen, who was a lagrettemann in 1741, but not mentioned after that. He was a user at Yttre Smedvik from 1734.
Berethe Olsdatter Smevigen has her confirmation recorded on 13 Jan 1762.
No confirmation record for Hans Olsen is found, but with no records from before 1750, this is consistent with him being born around 1731. However, the age stated in the tax census of 1772 (34), gives a y.o.b. of 1738. This is consistent with confirmation records for:
1753: Hans Olsen, Subestad (b. 1735), son of Ole Hansen Saupstad (1710 - 1747) & Marit Jacobsdatter (1708 - 1786)
1755: Hans Olsen
1757: Hans Olsen, Sletengen, m. 29 Oct 1762 to Berethe Olsdatter Løwdalen. Excluded.
1758: Hans Olsen, Unstad (21 1/2). Son of Ole Pedersen Unstad & Dorethe Albrechtsdatter Eggum. The profile at trekilen.com has connected this Hans to ours, but no proof is offered.[17]
Note that there is another Berith OlsD yder Smevig with confirmation recorded in 1781 (age 22)
A Karen Christophersdatter, Smewigen is 19 at conf. in 1758, possibly a daughter of Christopher Mikelsen.
The 1772 census records at Yttre Smevig:
Johannes Olsen (58) and wife, Stepdaughter Berte Olsd. (30)
Hans Olsen (34) and wife
Johannes Joensøn (36) and wife
Hans Christophersen (40) and wife
And 1772 at Indre Smevigen:
Jens Lorentzen (44) and wife
Niels Olsen (25) and wife
At Smedvig, the following people pay the volunteer tax of 1773-5:
Y.Smedvig 1773,74,75: Jon Olsen
Y.Smedvig 1773,74,75: Hans Olsen
Y.Smedvig 1773,74,75: Hans Christophersen
Y.Smedvig 1773,74,75: Johannes Jonsen
I.Smedvig 1773,75: Jens Lorentsen
I.Smedvig1773,74,75: Jakob Andersen
I.Smedvig1773: Nils Olsen
I.Smedvig1774: Jens Sørensen
I.Smedvig1775: Anders Michelsen
Another baptism (29 Sep 1762):
Christopher Hansen and Maren Magnusdatter of Valle, their son: Johannes. Godparents: Elen Andersdatter Smevigen, Beret Olsdatter ibm, Johannes Ols. ibm, Hans Christophersen ibm, Niels Christophersen Sletengen
Elen Andersdatter married Johannes Olsen 13 Aug 1769.
Christopher Hansen of Y. Smedvik c. 1786.
Since the wedding of Hans and Riborg is not recorded in Borge parish, it is not unlikely that they came from outside the parish. No other matching record has been found so a likely possibility is that they came from Vågan parish, where the wedding protocols have been lost. There are several candidates for Hans Olsen in the military roll for 1755:
Hans Olsen Storvågen (~1742), perished at sea 28 Apr 1813
Hans Olsen Kabelvåg (~1745)
Hans Olsen Jersvold (~1733)
The first two are slightly too young to match his age of 34 in 1772.
The census of 1801 records 9 houses at Smeviik Yttre. Smeviig Indre is uninhabited. Other farms in the close proximity are Valle to the north and Limstrand to the south west.
