According to family tradition, Endre was a farmhand on Braten estate in Varmland, Sweden, where he met and fell in love with Maria Oldsdatter, the daughter of his employer. They eloped to Norway and had several children:

Endre immigrated with his wife and five children to North America in 1870, departing from Drammen on the Askur on May 5 arriving in Quebec on June 22.[2]
