Neil was born on 11 Apr 1950 in Boone, Iowa. He is the son of Richard Olson and Avenelle Ruth Johnson. He died of a brain tumor on 2 Jun 2012 in Boone, Iowa.

Neil Richard Olson, age 62, of 1304 Aldrich Avenue, died June 2, 2012, at the Boone County Hospital. Funeral Services will be Friday, June 8, 2012, at 10 a.m. at the Augustana Lutheran Church with Rev. Daniel Solomon officiating. Burial with military honors conducted the Boone Veterans Council will be in Linwood Park Cemetery. Following his death, Neil was a tissue donor.

Neil was born in Boone on April 11, 1950, the son of Richard and Avenelle (Johnson) Olson. He graduated from Boone High School in 1968 and then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served during the Vietnam War. Neil married Susan Winning in 1971 in Pennsylvania. The couple later divorced.

In 1985, he married Shelly Moran in Boone. They later divorced. After his military discharge, he worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railway, later the Union Pacific, as a conductor. He then owned/operated Yard Master Lawn Care in Boone. Neil later served as Superintendent of Boone City Parks for 10 years and in addition, he worked as a custodian and field maintenance man on a full time and later part-time basis at Boone High School. He won several awards for his detail maintenance at the football field. He presently was employed with Boone City Parks.

Neil loved life, enjoyed the outdoors, and always had a positive attitude. He enjoyed running, biking, shopping, eating at Belluci's Pizza and the Dutch Oven Bakery, socializing, Facebook, gardening, and landscaping. Neil also enjoyed watching TV comedies and cooking meat. He worked as a volunteer for many years with Johnny Appleseed and Relay For Life, and was a member of RAGBRAI Team High Life. As a youth, Neil was a Boy Scout. He served on the Boone City Park Board and was a member of the American Legion Post #56, the Fred K. Deaver Marine Corps League Detachment #100, Capital Striders running group, and he was a Master Gardener.

He is preceded in death his father and grandparents. Neil is survived by three daughters: Valeri Stafford and fiancé Jeff Rouse of Muscatine, Allison Wetzeler and husband Rob of Ankeny, and DaNeil Hurt and husband Nate of Virginia Beach, VA; his mother Avenelle Olson of Boone; a brother Kyle Olson of Campbell, CA; three sisters: Maureen Stoneburner and husband Lyle and Janelle Hilsabeck and husband Bryan all of Boone, and Andrea Taylor and husband Dennis of Clive; nine grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and Neil's 'boys'—his dogs Sparky, Bo, and Buster.
