Biography
Marie "Eleanore" (Olsson) Olson was born July 11, 1885 in Halabeck, Vinslov, Kristianstad, Sweden. She is the daughter of Jons (Olsson) Martinson and Hanna Andersdotter. [1] She was Baptized on July 24, 1885 and her sponsors were her Uncle Ola (Olsson) Martinson and her Aunt Hanna Qvant who had come from Navlinge, Kristianstad, Sweden. [2] [3]
After she was born in 1885, Marie moved with her parents Jons and Hanna, her sister Anna (Olsson) Olson and her grandparents Anders Mansson and Anna Svensdotter from Halabeck, Vinslov, Kristianstad, Sweden to Vinslov No. 6 and 7. [4]
Between 1885 and 1890, Marie lived with her parents Jons and Hanna, her sister Anna and her grandparents Anders Mansson and Anna Svensdotter in Vinslov No. 6 and 7, Kristianstad, Sweden. On November 12, 1887, her mother Hanna gave birth to her brother Nils (Olsson) Olson and on July 27, 1890, her mother gave birth to her sister Hilda (Olsson) Olson. [5]
Between 1891 and 1895, Marie lived with her parents Jons and Hanna, her sisters Anna and Hilda, her brother Nils and her grandparents Anders Mansson and Anna Svensdotter in Vinslov No. 6 and 7, Kristianstad, Sweden. On September 18, 1893, her mother Hanna passed away. [6]
Between 1896 and 1901, Marie lived with her father Jons, her sisters Anna and Hilda, her brother Nils her grandparents Anders Mansson and Anna Svensdotter in Vinslov No. 6 and 7, Kristianstad, Sweden. On March 7, 1896, her father Jons married second Bengta Mattisdotter. On March 14, 1896, her step-mother Bengta gave birth to her step-brother Ake (Olsson) Espelin, on October 27, 1897, her step-mother Bengta gave birth to her step-sister Sigrid Olsson, and on February 26, 1900, her step-mother Bengta gave birth to her step-sister Hanna Olsson. On November 20, 1899, her step-mother Bengta's mother Sissa Akesdotter moved from Navlinge No. 7, Kristianstad, Sweden and her step-mother's brother Jons Mattisson moved from Roc No. 3, Navlinge, Kristianstad, Sweden to Vinslov No. 6 and 7 to live with them. On December 11, 1900, her step-mother's brother Jons Mattisson moved to Fjalkestad, Kristianstad Sweden. In 1901, Marie moved to Vinslov No. 13, Kristianstad, Sweden. [7]
Between 1901 and 1902, Marie lived in Vinslov No. 13, Kristianstad, Sweden. She worked on the farm of Per Persson and Hanna Palsdotter. They had a twenty-one year old son named Johan Persson. In 1902, Marie moved back home to Vinslov No. 6 and 7. [8]
Between 1902 and October 1903, Marie lived with her father Jons, her step-mother Bengta, her sisters Anna and Hilda, her brother Nils, her grandparents Anders Mansson and Anna Svensdotter, her step-brothers Ake and Johan (Olsson) Espelin, her step-sisters Sigrid and Hanna and her step-grandmother Sissa Akesdotter in Vinslov No. 6 and 7, Kristianstad, Sweden. On May 11, 1902, her grandfather, Anders Mansson passed away and on October 25, 1903, her grandmother Anna Svensdotter passed away. [9]
When Marie had finished school she got a job as a maid on a farm and left Vinslöv for Västra Vram. On October 29, 1903, Marie moved to Vastra Vram, Kristianstad, Sweden. [10] On November 1, 1903, Marie arrived at Tollarp, Vastra Vram. [11]
Between November 1903 and May 1906, Marie lived in Tollarp No. 24, Vastra Vram, Kristianstad, Sweden. [12]
Marie and her boyfriend, Johan Persson, both planned on immigrating to the United States. Johan left Sweden around May 4, 1906 for the United States. With the ticket from her Uncle Ola (Olsson) Martinson, she followed Johan.
On May 4, 1906, Marie left Tollarp No. 24, Vastra Vram, Kristianstad, Sweden for America. [13] Her second cousin Emelie Olsson took her place on the farm.
Marie was the first one of her siblings to emigrate. Marie departed Gothenburg, Vastergotland, Sweden for Hull, Yorkshire, England on June 15, 1906 aboard the British Wilson Line’s SS Calypso. [14] [15] Hull was located on the North Sea side of England. A train took her west across country to Liverpool, Lancashire on the Irish Sea side of England. On June 20, 1906, the White Star Line’s SS Baltic sailed from Liverpool for New York City and arrived on June 29, 1906 at the Port of New York. Her final destination was with her Uncle O. Martenson, Station B, Route 7, Topeka, Kansas. [16] The SS Baltic, built in 1904, was the largest ship afloat in 1904-05.
However, Johan was not in Topeka, when Marie arrived, but instead was met at the train station by the West Side Baptist Church Youth Group. Johan had obtained a job in another location. Johan asked a friend of his to take care of Marie after her arrival in Topeka. That man was Carl Elmer Vickland, who later became Marie´s husband. Johan later returned to Sweden and arrived at his parents farm in Vinslov No. 13 on December 31, 1907. Johan was living in Vinslov No. 13 until 1911. [17]
The 1907 Topeka City Directory listed Marie as a domestic at 1302 SW Fillmore Street in Topeka. [18]

The 1910 Federal Census, taken April 21st, listed Marie, age 24, and her sister Hilda Olsson, boarding with their second cousin Sven (Olsson) Olson, his wife Elizabeth and their son Bryon at 135 SW Fillmore Street in Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas. Living next door was her cousin Carl "Charles" (Olsson) Martinson, Sr., his wife Lulu Sjolander and their daughter Margaret E. Martinson. [20]
In a May 19, 1910 newspaper marriage announcement, it was stated. "Invitations have been issued for the wedding of Miss Marie Eleanor Olson and Mr. Carl Elmer Vickland, which will take place Wednesday evening, May 25, at 8:30 o'clock, at the Swedish Baptist church." [21]
Marie "Eleanore" Olsson married Carl Elmer Vickland on May 25, 1910 at the Swedish Baptist Church in Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas. [22]
The 1915 Kansas State Census, taken March 1st, listed Marie, age 29, as living with her husband Carl and her sons Carl Reynold Vickland and Paul Melvin Vickland at 400 SW Buchanan Street in Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas. [23]
Marie and her family moved to Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota circa 1917.
The 1920 Federal Census, taken January 9th, listed Marie, age 34, as living with her husband Carl, her sons Carl Reynold, Paul Melvin and Harold Elmer Vickland and her daughter Ruth M. Vickland at 1101 Lincoln Street in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota. [24]
The 1930 Federal Census, taken April 5th, listed Marie, age 44, as living with her husband Carl, her sons Carl Reynold, Paul Melvin and Harold Elmer and her daughters Ruth M., Marjorie Z. Vickland and Florence Alyce Vickland at 2800 NE Cleveland Street in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota. [25]
The 1938 Minneapolis City Directory listed Marie as living with her husband Carl, her son Carl Reynold and her daughter Ruth at 2800 NE Cleveland Street in Minneapolis. [26]
The 1940 Federal Census, taken April 6th, listed Marie, age 54, as living with her husband Carl, her son Carl Reynold, and her daughters Ruth M., Marjorie Z. and Florence at 2800 NE Cleveland Street in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota. [27]
The 1950 Federal Census, taken April 18th, listed Marie, age 64, as living with her husband Carl E., her daughter Florence A. Weber and her son-in-law Howard T. Weber at 2800 Cleveland in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota. Her occupation was listed as keeping house. [28]
In an October 24, 1961 newspaper obituary, it was stated, "MRS. MARIE E. VICKLAND - Services for Mrs. Marie E. Vickland, 76, 3303 N. France Av., Robbinsdale, who died Sunday, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elim Baptist church with burial in Glen Haven Memorial Garden. Survivors include her husband, Carl E.; three daughters, Mrs. Donald T. Warner, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Mrs. Harold D. Jensen and Mrs. Howard T. Weber, Jr., both of Minneapolis; three sons, C. Reynold, Cleveland, Ohio, and Paul Melvin and Harold E., both of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Malm, Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. Hilda Fritz, Albuquerque, N. M.,; and a brother, Nels Olson, Topeka, Kan. [29]
Marie passed away on October 22, 1961 in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota at age 76. [30] She was buried in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in Crystal, Hennepin, Minnesota. [31] [32]
