Ellison Shoji Onizuka (June 24, 1946 – January 28, 1986) was an American astronaut from Kealakekua, Hawaii.

1946 Born in Kealakekua, Kona, Hawaii, USA.

1969 Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering and Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering, University of Colorado. Participated in Air Force ROTC. During his Air Force career, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

1985 Flew on Discovery STS-51-C as MS1 with Thomas Kenneth Ken Mattingly II, Loren Shriver, James Buchli and Gary Payton. Awarded the NASA Space Flight Medal. [2]
