Arthur William Onslow was born on 25th May 1877 in Camden Park, Menangle, New South Wales (Australia). He was the fourth son of Captain Arthur Onslow RN and Elizabeth McArthur. [1] After his father died in 1882, his mother took her children to England in 1887 to complete their education while she studied dairy farming. When his mother changed her name to Macarthur-Onslow in 1892, fifteen year-old Arthur also took the name, Macarthur-Onslow.
Arthur William enlisted in the British Army upon completing his schooling and did not return to New South Wales as did his older siblings.
Arthur served in the Boer War with the British Army, in the 16th (Queen's) Lancers. He sailed for South Africa from Albert Docks, England, aboard the Montrose 11th February 1900. He returned to England on the Bavarian, 14th February 1901. For his war service he was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal.
In 1911 at St George Hanover Square, London, England, Arthur married Cristabel Beech. [2] They made their home at 43 Thurloe Square, South Kensington, London.Aged 37 years, Arthur was killed in action in Ypres, Belgium on 5th November 1914. At the time he was a Captain with the 16th (Queen's) Lancers. He is buried in the Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery, Belgium. [3] His name is listed on the Soldiers' Memorial, Macarthur Park, Camden, New South Wales. [4] He was awarded the 1914 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
By way of legacy, Onslow Street, Canterbury, New South Wales, was named by Canterbury City Council 'as a memorial to a brave officer who had fallen in the Empire's cause'.
