Birth and Origins

John Earl Oram was born c. 1847, London, England, son of Walter Oram (Baker) and Mary Anne Blackwell.

In the 1851 England and Wales Census, Walter Oram (43, married, Baker, b. Cricklade, Wiltshire) lived at St Martin In The Fields, Middlesex, England with his wife, Mary Ann Oram (39, b. London, Middlesex) and children, Walter Oram (12, b. Taddington, Middlesex), John Oram (3, b. Charing Cross,) and Jessica Oram (0, b. Charing Cross,) along with a visitor, John Rendergast, (42, unmarried, Clerk In Pay Master General Office, b. East Indies) and niece, Mary Ann Robinson (16, shopmaid, b. Nottinghamshire) and servants, Mary Allison (24, housemaid, b. Downham, Cambridgeshire), Mary Pateman (17, b. Groombridge, Kent), Hannah Thompson (47, b. Scotland), Daniel Eason (22, b Scotland) and Charles Pendams (17, b. Edmonton, Hertfordshire)[1]

Marriage and Family

John Earl Oram ( 27, b. London, son of Walter and Mary Anne) married Lucy Elizabeth Bowman (20, daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Bowman) on 8 Sept 1873 at Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada[2] [3]

  • Emily Oram b. 15 May 1883, Dublin, Ireland (Sarah Pentebridge present at the birth[5]
  • unnamed daughter 24 Mar 1886, Dublin, Ireland[6] Possibly Evelyn Emily Oram who died 4 Dec 1901 (aged 15), (her mother Lucy Elizabeth Oram present at her death), Ormonde, Eglington St, Dublin, Ireland[7]
  • Gladys (Oram) Miller b. 22 Feb 1890, Dublin, Ireland[8] m. John Fair Miller [9]

He returned to Ireland on or before 1880, though his wife and some of the children either stayed (or returned for a visit) to the Bowman farm in 1881. [10]

He was mentioned in the 1886 probate documents of (his brother-in-law) Arthur Hill Curtis as " John Earl Oram, 67 Palmerston Road, County Dublin, MA, ME, one of the executors". [11]


He obtained a MA & Bachelor of Engineering.

James Earl Oram (1848-1900) was educated at Queen's Galway (BE 1868, MA 1882). In the 1870s he served as professor of maths, natural history, engineering and astronomy at Kingston College[12]

John Earle Oram, of the Royal University of Ireland was Professor of Experimental Science in King's College (?Nova Scotia, Canada) in late 1860s to 1870s. (Where a number of his children were born). [13]

John E Oram MA is listed as Librarian of the Royal University of Ireland 1880[14]

By the 1880s he was back in Dublin working as an engineer.[12]


John Earl Oram (age 52, married, civil engineer) died 8 Feb 1900 at Ormonde, Eglington Road, Dublin, Ireland. His son Walter C Oram was present at his death.[15]

On 22 March, 1900, probate of the will of John Earle Oram late of Ormonde Eglington-road, Dublin, MA CE who died 8 February 1900 was granted at Dublin to Lucy E. Oram, widow.[16]

Funeral Feb 1900:

"ORAM—At his residence,. Ormonde, Eglinton road, John Earle Oram, of the Royal University aged 52, after a lingering illness, to the heartfelt grief of his sorrowing family. - Funeral will leave Eglinton road on this (Saturday) morning at 8 45; Service in Rathmines Church at 9 o'clock."[17]
