Biography

Lorine was born in 1897. She was the daughter of Albert Edward Orange and Helen Hinkley. [1] She passed away in 1912 age 15 . [2]

DIES UNDER AN ANAESTHETIC. A girl named Lorine Orange, 15 years of age, whose parents reside in Sale's road, Papanui, died at the Christchurch Hospital about noon yesterday, while undergoing an operation for the removal of adenoids and tonsils. , An inquest was held before Mr H. W. Bishop, district coroner. Albert Edward Orange, father of the deceased, said that she was generally in very good health, and he had thought that there was absolutely no danger. Dr. Scott, medical superintendent of the hospital, said that he had seen the deceased as an out-patient first on August 19th, when she was suffering from enlarged tonsils. She came in that morning for the purpose of having her tonsils removed, having been fully and carefully examined as to her suitability for an operation. Her heart was practically normal. Witness administered chloroform, which deceased had taken well, and the operation was performed by Dr. Robertson, under witness's supervision. The patient had collapsed instead of coming round just as the operation was finished. Artificial respiration was tried, but the patient never recovered consciousness. Dr. Robertson, house surgeon at the hospital, and Dr. Fenwick, who conducted the post mortem, also gave evidence, the latter stating that, there were some defects in the heart which he did not think could have been detected during life. He considered that the operation was perfectly safe. The coroner returned the following verdict: —"Deceased, whilst submitting to an operation for the removal of tonsils and adenoids, collapsed and died as the result of an incompetent aortic valve and general lymphatic condition." Dr. Fenwick said that the circumstances were important for doctors, as the lymphatic condition of the heart was being investigated in England with a view to finding its cause. So far only about sixty cases of death being due to the lymphatic condition of the heart had been recorded. [3]
