Biography

Son of Harald Maddadson and Gormflaeth MacHeth^[1]

Implicated in the burning of Adam, Bishop of Caithness, at Halkirk in 1222 by local farmers.^[2]

Joint Jarl of Orkney together with his brother David from 1206 after the death of his father.^[3] Ruled as sole Jarl until 1231, after David's death in 1214.^[1]

He enjoyed an uneasy relationship with the Norwegian king, travelling several times to his court in Bergen, leaving his eldest son Harald there as hostage in 1224. Harald drowned shortly thereafter.^[1]

Murdered by Snækoll Gunnisson at Thurso in 1231.^[4]
