At the time of the 1861 Census, John, aged 3 years, was with parents three sibliings, Harriet (7), William (5) and Alice (1), at St James Street, Great Boughton, Cheshire.^[2]

Following in his father's footsteps, John was working as a Locomotive Engineer when, on 27 December 1883, he married Catherine Anne Blythe Orme (abt.1860-bef.1901) at Dublin. ^[3][4][5]
