At the time of the 1841 Census, John and Mary were at Parr's Wood, Chorlton, Manchester, Lancashire with four children at home, Joseph, Ellen, Sarah and Mary.[4]
In 1851 they were at Didsbury, Lancashire and had two children at home. John was a labourer.[5]
