Biography

Elizabeth Orndorff was born about 1785 or 1786 in Shenandoah County, Virginia, daughter of Philip and Elizabeth, married William Williams on September 5, 1806 in Shenandoah County, Virginia. They were living in the Cedar Creek area of western Frederick County, Virginia, in 1810 and 1820. A careful analysis of census records shows that they migrated in the early 1820s from Frederick County, Virginia, to Guernsey County, Ohio, along with many other families from the Cedar Creek area of Frederick and Shenandoah Counties, and in 1830 they were living in Washington Township, in Guernsey County, with one male age 50-60, one female age 40-50, one male 30-40, two males 5-10, one male under 5 and a female 15-20. By 1840, William was deceased and the family was living in Buffalo Township in Guernsey County. Elizabeth, between 50 and 59 years old, was head of the household. There were 2 males ages 15-20 and one female age 20-29 in the household with her. In 1850, the family was still in Buffalo, in Guernsey County, Elizabeth gave her age as 65 and three others, all in their twenties, were in the household. By 1860, many of the Williams children and their mother were living in Guthrie County, Iowa, where Elizabeth died in 1862.

Elizabeth gave her age as 65 in 1850, and her age was given as 74, in 1860, probably provide to the census taker by her daughter. Her brother Jacob was said to have been born in 1787. Calculated from her age on the stone she was born in late 1786, putting Jacob's 1787 date in doubt unless she was actually born in 1785.

Note

There are over 778 family trees on Ancestry for this couple but most seem to be copies of other Ancestry trees which have little merit except getting the death date right. For everything else, between marriage and death, most of the Ancestry trees include any Elizabeth or William Williams someone found in the censuses or Find-A-Grave, from various counties in Virginia, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky and Iowa, without any proof or documentation establishing them as William and Elizabeth Orndorff Williams, who married in Shenandoah County, Virginia. Few if any, have an accurate list of their children.
