Publications: Hugh Orr (1717-98), born in Lochwinnoch, inventor of a machine for dressing flax, took a patriotic part in the war of the Revolution by casting guns and shot for the Continental Army, besides doing much to encourage rope-making and spinning. His son, Robert, invented an improved method of making scythes and was the first manufacturer of iron shovels in New England.

Hugh Orr of Bridgewater, Esqr., did intestate and on 27 December 1798, Nahum Mitchell of Bridgewater was granted the administration of his estate.[13]

His inventory was taken on 5 March 1799 in Bridgewater. [14]

In 1799, his widow Mary received her dower.[15]

In 1803, an account of his estate by Nahum Mitchell was recorded which included cash collected, real estate sold, property to the widow, appraisers, debts paid, a gown for the widow, supplies to the widow, and administration fees.[16]
