In 1857, his father and uncle Thomas had taken on the lease of Castle Farm, the demesne lands of Glenarm, County Antrim, Ireland; after losing the lease on the family farm in Ayrshire. It is likely that William was born at Castle Farm.
The family returned to Ayrshire in about January 1862 after disposing of the lease on Castle Farm, taking up a farm at Kirkoswald.

In 1882 in New Zealand he married Bessie Sergison.

He passed away 27 Dec 1927 at Greytown.
