Biography

Early Childhood

James E. Orr, sixth eldest of the eleven known children of Thomas Orr and Agnes Smart, was born in Pleasant Ridge, Saint Patrick Parish, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, 30 Jun 1842.[2] New Brunswick was at the time a British Colony, and it remained so until 1867, becoming that year one of Canada's four founding provinces.[3] As for Pleasant Ridge, a tiny, rural community along the New Brunswick's Magaguadavic River,[4] it was part of Saint Patrick Parish until 1856, when Dumbarton Parish was formed from Saint Patrick's northern half.[5]

James had five elder sisters: Margaret, who was born in about 1834,[7] Mary, born in 1835,[8] Ellen, born in 1837,[9] Agnes, born in about 1839,[10] and Elizabeth, born in 1840.[11] He also had five junior siblings: his brother, David, who was born in 1843,[12] his brother, Peter, born in 1846,[13] his sister, Hannah, born in 1848,[14] his brother, Thomas, born in 1850,[15] and his sister, Sarah, born in 1852.[16]

In 1851, eight year-old James resided in a frame house in Pleasant Ridge, in Saint Patrick Parish, with his parents and nine of his siblings.[17]

Death of Father, Siblings

James's father survived the 1852 birth of James's sister, Sarah, for only a couple of years, dying in Pleasant Ridge, 16 Jul 1854, at age 46.[18] In about 1859, James's sister, Margaret, married Joshua Babcock and settled in Pomeroy Ridge, New Brunswick, about 25 miles southwest of Pleasant Ridge.[7] By 1860, his sister, Mary, had moved to Bancroft, Maine, residing with the family of James's maternal uncle, John, and the following year, in Maine, Mary wed Barney Fitzpatrick.[8] As for the whereabouts of James in 1861, he continued to reside in Pleasant Ridge with his widowed mother and five of his siblings: Elizabeth, David, Peter, Hannah, Thomas and Sarah.[19]

James lost two siblings in the 1860s: his sister, Margaret, died in Pomeroy Ridge, New Brunswick, in 1862, at age 27,[7] and his brother, David, died in Pleasant Ridge in 1866, at age 22).[12]

James's sister, Ellen, died in Alexander, Maine, in 1882, at age 46.[9] His sister, Mary, died in Bancroft, Maine, in 1901, at age 65.[8]

James died in Wilson County, Kansas, 11 Jun 1913, at age 70.[20] He's buried in Altoona Cemetery, in Altoona, Kansas.[20]

James was survived by at least five (and perhaps six - Agnes's death date isn't known[10]) of his eleven known siblings (listed here in order of their deaths): Elizabeth (who died in Seattle, Washington, in 1919, at age 78),[11] Peter (who died in Seattle in 1920, at age 74),[13] Thomas (who died in Saint Andrew, New Brunswick, in 1934, at age 83),[15] Sarah (who died in Leverville, New Brunswick, in 1936, at age 84),[16] and Hannah (who died in New Brunswick in 1942, at about age 94).[14]
