Gilbert was born about 1765. He was the son of Joseph Orser and Ann Jurckse. In 1796 Orser, Arthur U.E.; Orser, Gilbert U.E.; Orser, Isaac U.E.; and Orser, Widow U.E. [referring to their mother Ann Jurckse Orser] are all listed as residents of Kingston, Upper Canada (later Ontario).[1] In 1808 he is listed as a land owner in Hallowell, Prince Edward County, in what is today Ontario. (He is the only Orser listed)[2] He passed away in 1851[3]
He travelled with his family aboard the ship Camel from New York to Sorel, Quebec in the summer of 1783[4] The family of Samuel Wright was also aboard this ship. Gilbert is on the United Empire Loyalist list.[5]
