Life Story

Owen was educated at King’s College School (KCS - then located in the Strand, London, now in Wimbledon, London) from 1851-1856 where he won prizes for Classics. [16] In the 1857 KCS Prize Giving, reported in the London Evening Standard Owen as an upper sixth former, was presented with prizes for Hebrew, Greek Lambics and English Essay by the Lord Bishop of London. [17] He proceeded to matriculate to Balliol College, University of Oxford in autumn 1857, before gaining a Scholarship to Corpus Christi College at the University of Oxford, studying there between 1858-1862; graduating BA in 1862 and gaining his MA in Literature and Humanities in 1864. [18] He graduated on 13 May 1864.[19] A letter from Balliol College's Archivist, J H Jones quotes from their college records that in 1857 at the end of Michaelmas Term, Benjamin Jowett found Orton's conduct to be good and his work was highly promising and satisfactory, whilst Swinburn reports he was good, but wanting in energy. [20]

There is a paper programme for a performance of The Merchant of Venice performed at 2, Carlton Villas, Putney, London (a private residence) on Wednesday 10 January 1855 showing the play's cast, with Owen playing Tubal and his brother, Charles as Balthazar. Also in the cast are William Previté (later to be known as Reverend William (Previté) Previté-Orton MA (1837-1912) ) and William's brother, Joseph Weedon Previte; William became Owen's brother-in-law, by marrying his sister, Eliza Swaffield Orton (1840-1908). [21]

He was ordained a Deacon in 1862 and then a Priest in 1864. His early church postings included being the curate at Tortworth [22] and to Cromhall in Gloucestershire. He was Chaplain, Theology Tutor and Bell Lecturer at Trinity College, Glenalmond. He gave the inaugural Bell Education lecture in Edinburgh on 2 April 1866. [23]. He was Curate at Scarcliff and of Langwith in Derbyshire. [24][25]

Owen was Rector of St James in Normanton-on-Soar, Nottinghamshire from 1868 during when major restoration took place on the church. [26] [27] Owen erected the rectory at his own expense and contributed £500 to the church's restoration.[28]

The Electoral Register records from 1889 -1909 for Wimbledon, London annually show Owen as the freeholder of properties at 1-9 (odd) and 14-22 (even) Elmsleigh Rd and 2-21 (even numbers) Birdhurst Rd. (Owning property was a voting qualification at that time.) [29]

He was reported in the Nottingham Evening Post as being ill in October 1906 and of being confined to his room. [30].

Death

Owen died on 10 January 1909, aged 70 in his home. [31] He was buried in St James' churchyard, Normanton-on-Soar, Nottinghamshire on 12 January. [32][33] He had not been in good health for some time, but passed suddenly. His funeral was attended by most of the parish and many clerical colleagues. [34] He left a will leaving monies in trust for his children and various bequests. His estate's net worth was £22,442. [35][36]

Research Notes

DNA: An AncestryDNA test match has confirmed Owen is linked to his parents, John Swaffield Orton (1810-1888) and Elizabeth (Frampton) Orton (1812-1890), via five of John's descendants, including Owen's great grandson, Nigel Orton (see his profile).

Also, an AncestryDNA test match analysis links Owen to Richard Frampton (abt.1781-abt.1857), John's father-in-law.
