John Silley Orton was born in 1803 in Churston Ferrers, Devon, England. He is the son of George Anthony Orton RN (abt.1760-1812) and his wife, Mary Silley (1770-aft.1841).
John was baptised privately on 1 November in Churston Ferrers church, Devon, England. [1][2] and then with his twin brother he was baptised in to the congregation on 24 November. [3]
John was admitted to the Greenwich Hospital School. His entry record confirms his baptism date in Churston Ferrers, that his father was a Lieutenant in the Navy and John was a twin to Thomas Robert Orton (1803-1832). [4] This school became the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook nr Ipswich, Suffolk but at John's time it met in the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Today, it is an independent HMC boarding school with strong naval connections. In John's time, it was mainly for orphans of seafarer's children. As his father died in 1812, John may well have fulfilled such admission criteria. [5]
John's passing is recorded at Dittisham, Devon in 1824. [6]
