Alice Osborn was born in King's Langley, Hertfordshire on the 7th May 1872 - being one of five girls and one boy to James Osborn and his wife Sarah Wright. The Son immigrated to Australia at a young age.
James Osborn was a papermaker journeyman, working his mill at King's Langley. He later moved the family to Apsley End in the extreme Northwest corner of Hertfordshire, where he continued to make paper in the mill there.
Apsley End is some twenty eight to thirty miles from East Barnet, where Rowland lived with his parents Joseph and Elizabeth. It is not known for certain how our grandfather, Rowland, met our grandmother, Alice. According to Bill (William Joseph Conisbee), he believes that his Mother, Alice, was either working in the mill with her Father or was in service at one of the large houses in the Apsley End area.
