He married Rachel Hodson on October 6, 1810 at the Deep Creek Monthly Meeting of Surry County, North Carolina. In 1835 Richard moved from Guilford County, North Carolina to Hendricks County, Indiana (his society of friends membership was transferred on May 16, 1835 to the White Lick Monthly Meeting).
The family lived near Plainfield, Indiana for several years before finally heading west and settling at Pleasant Plain, Iowa.
