Generation Numbering System This profile has Thomas Osborne Jr. as the 2nd generation, based the traditional numbering system which has Capt. Thomas Osborne as the founder of the Coxendale, Henrico County, Osbornes. John Frederick Dorman, however, in his 4th ed. of “Adventurers of Purse and Person” now claims that the founder was the Thomas Osborne who arrived in 1620 on the Francis Bonaventure and in 1624/5 at age 18 was one of the governor’s men living in James City. He makes him this Thomas and puts him the 1st generation, causing confusion. [See discussion under Research Notes on Capt. Thomas Osborne's profile.]

Thomas Osborne Jr. was a Virginia colonist.

Thomas Osborne Jr. [2][3][4][5]

Born: 1616, estimated, likely earlier. In 1637 he was old enough transport himself and 9 others to Virginia.

  • Said to be in 1616 in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, England, father born in Creeksea, Maldon District, Essex, [6] [7][8] but there is no such baptism in Cranfield parish register. The only Osborne baptisms 1600-1625 had fathers Richard or John. The first baptism of a Thomas Osborne was in 1665. The first baptism where Thomas Osborne was the father was in 1628. With his alleged parents being from Essex and Sussex I don't think your Thomas was from Cranfield, which needs removing as his birthplace. See transcript at https://archive.org/details/bedfordshirepari27bedf/page/3/mode/1up
  • Baptized 19 Jan 1616 ? - a Thomas Osborne, son of Thomas [mother's name not given] was baptized in Epping, Essex, England. However, there is a burial record there of a Thomas Osborne 10 Sept 1650 and 10 Sep 1652, which doesn't fit this family.[9]
  • 1615 England. Ancestry's database.[10] No source given.

Arrival: By 1637. See timeline below.

Residence: Henrico, Virginia.

Marriage: Wife unknown. No record of a wife's name has been found in the records, not even a first name.

  • Some family trees claim he married a Martha Jones but give no supporting documentation.[6][7][8] Appears to have come from Ancestry's database which gives no sources.[10]

Died: Apr 1687. Coxendale, Henrico, Virginia.[6][7][8] No source given.

Timeline

1616 born? An earlier date is more likely. See 1637 below.

c.1635 sailed to Virginia, being old enough to have the capital to pay his own passage and that of 9 others. Needed time to have the 1637 land surveyed and applied for.

1637 Jun 16 ‘Thomas Osborne Junr’ rec’d patent to 500 acres in Henrico Co. “the whole tract of land to bee [sic] called by the name "Batchelers bancke" due for transporting his person and 9 others [named]. The land bordered “Fearing” [his father’s land.][11]

_____ married __________. [No record of a wife's name has been found in the records, not even a first name.]

1641 son Thomas born. [He was age 48 in 1689 when he testified.] [12]

1642 [No longer referred to as Jr., so father has died.] Rec’d patent to 400 acres at the head of Coxendale and bounded WNW by the land of Christopher Branch (Kingsland), NNE by Mr. Osborne's land called Fearing and SSW into the woods, being 200 poles in breadth from the head of Proctor Creek toward the land called Mount My Lady [Malady] and a full mile into the woods. [13]

c.1646 son Edward born. [He was 'ab't 48 years' on June 1, 1694, when he testified.[14]

1667 assigned his headright and his right for the transportation of Alex Wood to the colonies to Thomas Lockett. Presumably Lockett was marrying Thomas's daughter. Lockett's wife was named Margaret. [See Thomas Lockett I (abt.1645-1686).]

[Henrico County records prior to 1677 are lost.]

Apr 1687 died, per above. [need proof,]

Children: Sons Thomas and Edward based on their having adjoining land, i.e. an inheritance split. A daughter Margaret [see reference in 1667 above].

For those of you who have the ancestry.com upgrade, can you help fill in the details from these church records in England. Thanks.

Also does anyone have access to those S- and R- references?

Hi Carrie! Dorman has 1641 as date of birth for the Thomas Osborne that married Martha, widow of John Branch. The profile for Martha Jones says her husband's will was dated 1733. Therefore, I'm going to change the dates on this profile and propose a merge with Osborne-1592.

P.S. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/155062364/thomas-osborne - for Thomas, son of Thomas born c1594 - is an extra generation (see Dorman's footnote, page 737). https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/155062213/thomas-osborne (for Thomas born c1594) incorrectly says he married Martha Jones (the image attached to that memorial shows a later generation Thomas Osborne married Martha Jones; Dorman shows his son as marrying Martha, widow of John Branch).

Osborne-2262 and Osbourne-189 appear to represent the same person because: Clear duplicate. Info from other proposed merges dovetails with these profiles.

The sources don't yield any info. Can you please provide real documentation. We'd like to merge but need the facts first. Thanks

We don't know the name of his wife, due to the county records having been destroyed. Who is this Martha?

Carrie, It's been over a month since I emailed you regarding the 'Coxendale' Osbornes. Would like to hear from you or one of the Project leaders. Thanks.

Hi John, feel free to add the source but this is not the son of Thomas Osborne b. 1590; they were distinguished in Purse and Person which is explained in the Notes section.

Osborne-3062 Unmerged match

These profiles appear to represent the same person, but there is so little information, it is difficult to tell.

Caution: If it is decided they need to be merged, please do a thorough search for a lower numbered profile (and for other spellings), before proposing. Thanks!
