Biography

William Thomas Lowe Osborne (Tom) was born in 1870 at Glenburn and went to school at Broken Creek. He was on the farm from the time he left school and worked on the second farm, called "Osborne House" at Stewarton, after his father died. The two farms, which were about three miles apart, were left to Charles and John, so William had to buy the farm.

In 1908 he married Eleanor Frances Cook, known as Frances, who was also from Broken Creek where her parents, John Cook and Margaret Henderson, had a farm, "Glenfell", which later passed to her brother, John. She was born in 1883, her father died when she was still at school and her elder brother raised the family. Her bother, Thomas, bought Emu Plains homestead and over 600 acres when the estate was broken up, and all the Cook family moved there. Frances and Tom were married on 27 May 1908 in the courtyard at Emu Plains under the arch, and settled at Stewarton about fifteen miles from Benalla and near Goorambat. Tom had two rooms built on after he married.

Stewarton itself is a small town consisting of Post Office, hall and school but no shop. They lived there growing wheat and grazing sheep. Tom died on 7 October 1945 at Goorambat, aged 75. Deceased was born at Whittlesea, and was married at Emu Bridge to Miss Eleanor F. Cook, who survives him, as well as a family of three sons and two daughters. Interment took place in the Devenish cemetery. [Benalla Ensign, 19 Oct 1945] Frances died ten years later on 3 November 1955 at Benalla, where her brothers and sisters had come to live with her. They had four children, who attended the Broken Creek school. [photos of both]
