Biography

Samuel T Osborne was born in 1830 and baptised on 23 February 1837 at Breage. He married Margaret Lawry daughter of John Lawry a tin dresser, on 19 May 1859 at St.Just where he was a blacksmith at Bosavern, next door to his father Naboth, and and they had three children born at St.Just, and then he moved to Ravensthorpe where their fourth child was born. In the 1871 census he was a blacksmith at Bailey’s Buildings, Dewsbury, Yorkshire, with Margaret 32, William D 11, Margaret J 9, Samuel J 6, all born at St Just, and Annie L 6 month, born at Ravensthorpe. There was a report about A Samuel Osborne who is probably our man: “Shocking accident to a mechanic. On Thursday night week, Samuel Osborne, a mechanic, in the employ of Messrs James Howgate and Sons, Ravensthorpe, sustained a very serious accident. He had been trying to cut a very thick piece of wood by means of a circular saw, but had unfortunately turned it the wrong way, and the wood was thrown to the top pf the room. Trying with bodily strength to rectify the error, his left arm was cut through the blood vessels and sinews to the bone, and the injured man almost bled to death.” [Dewsbury Chronicle, 18 May 1872]

In 1881 Samuel 51 from Breage was a timekeeper in the woollen factory living in Queen Street Mirfield, Yorks with Margaret 41, William D 21 a cloth finisher, Margaret J 18 a wool weaver, Samuel 15 a bobbin winder (wool), all born in St.Just, Annie L 10, John T L 8 and Mary E 5, all born in Mirfield. Elected a Guardian of the Belper Union in 1891.I n 1891 Samuel 61 a timekeeper born at St.Just, lived in nearby Sackville Street, Mirfield, with Margaret 57, Margaret 28 weaver cloth, Samuel 25 pattern weaver, all born at St.Just, Annie L cloth weaver, John T 18 book keeper, and Mary E 15, all born at Ravensthorpe.
