Biography

Humphrey Osborne, 6 August 1866 St.Buryan. In 1881 Humphrey 14 was staying with his maternal grandfather Richard Osborne at Westmoor St Buryan. “The new police officer. The Watch Committee of the Town Council have seleted Humphrey Osborne of Buryan, age 20, to fill the vacancy in the Borough Police Force, and he commenced his duties on Saturday last.” [The Cornish Telegraph, 7 Oct 1886] Humphrey married Mary Ann Jose daughter of John M Jose and Elizabeth Jane Harris, who was born 17 June 1864 at Majorca, on 9 September 1891 at Fitzroy, and had five children. . “Marriages. Osborne -Jose. September 9, 1891, at the Bible Christian Parsonage, Gore street, Fitzroy, by the Rev W Hart, Humphrey, only son of Joseph Osborne, late of St Buryan, to Mary Ann, youngest daughter of the late John Mitchell Jose, formerly of Mount Hawke, St Agnes,” [The Cornish Telegraph, 25 Feb 1892] Served in Victorian Constabulary. He was a police constable living at the Sebastapol Police Station in 1914 with Mary Ann and children, and in 1931 a police constable living at 509 Ripon street Sabatapol with Mary Ann. They lived in Rippon street Ballarat in 1926. Humphrey of 14 Exeter street Ballarat aged 76, late of the Victoria Police Force, died on 7 August 1942 in East Malvern, Melbourne and was buried at StKilda Cemetery Wesleyan. [The Argus, 17 Aug 1942] Leaving Mary Ann and Bert, Wilfred and Nesta (Mrs FW Young, Carrum street Oakleigh) Mary Ann died in September 1944 at Murrumbeena. [The Argus, 25 Sept 1944]
