Biography

Indiana was sold as a slave to the man who adopted her when she was a baby. He had her declared "white" by the Mississippi Legislature and officially adopted her, giving her the name "Indiana Osburn". Her name as a slave was simply "Margaret".

• A Petition for Emancipation of baby known as Margaret, purchased as a slave by Samuel Osborne, was approved by the Mississippi Legislature on December 9, 1833.
