Biography

Indiana was sold as a slave to the man who adopted her when she was a baby. He had her declared "white" by the Mississippi Legislature and officially adopted her, giving her the name "Indiana Osburn". Her name as a slave was simply "Margaret".

  • A Petition for Emancipation of baby known as Margaret, purchased as a slave by Samuel Osborne, was approved by the Mississippi Legislature on December 9, 1833. The birth date of Dec 2, 1832 was recorded in the Hunt Family Bible. The death date of October 9, 1923, was also recorded in the Hunt Family Bible.
