Biography

English flag
William Osgood has English ancestors.

The son of John Osgood and Martha (Van Vleet) Osgood, William Osgood was born in Lodi, New York[citation needed] in 1830. His father passed away in 1841, shortly before the birth of his youngest child, Elizabeth. William's family made a plan to go west to the Michigan Territory, leaving his oldest brother, Lester, behind with his mother to settle their father's estate. Lester and their mother joined them in Michigan by 1850, traveling back to New York periodically to finish the settlement.[1]

In 1850, at age 20, William lived in Tecumseh Township, Michigan, residing in the home Thomas and Willomena Cumminsand working as as a mechanic, the same occupation listed for Thomas Cummins.[2] William married Josephine (Hand) Osgood, marrying in Lenawee County, Michigan on May 4, 1859,[citation needed] having four known children together. They made their home in Macon township, Michigan not far from his wife's family farm in Macon Township, farming.[3]

In 1863, with two of his brothers, Lester and James Osgood, William registered for the Civil War draft in the 1st Congressional District of Michigan.[4] H did not enlist, and continued to live and farm in Macon Township.[5] In 1880, William's nephew, John S. Osgood, lived in William's household, working as a farm laborer.[6] By 1900, all William's children had left home, with the exception of Mae, the youngest. Mae, her husband, Percy Morgan, and their daughter, Henrietta, lived with William, while Percy Morgan helped William work the farm.[7] By 1910, William had retired from farming and Percy worked the Osgood family farm, farming on their own account.[8]

William Osgood passed away in Macon Township, Michigan[citation needed] at the age of 88[9] and is buried in the Osgood family plot at Macon Cemetery, on Macon-Mills Highway in Macon Township, Michigan.[10]
