Biography

John Osgood was born in Dorchester, South Carolina about 17170. He received his education at Harvard, and returned to South Carolina, eventually becoming the third pastor of the Congregationalist church. In 1753 he joined that group that moved to St. John's Parish, Georgia. at what was Midway, Georgia. Rev. John Osgood married twice, and had two children,—Sarah, who married John Quarterman, Jr., and Mary, who married Joseph Way, His first wife was Hannah and his second was Mary Andrew, sister of Judge Benjamin Andrew. The Andrew family was quite large, as follows: Benjamin, James, the father of John and grandfather of Bishop James Osgood Andrew, Joseph, and Lydia, who married first, Saunders and second, John Winn, Sr., Hannah, who married first, George Godfrey and second, Rev. John Alexander, Elizabeth, second wife of Richard Baker, and Mary, (2d) wife of Rev. John Osgood. [1]

Church records describe his declining health as early as 1771:

June 1771 The Reverend Mr. Osgood being in a bad state of health preached but one sermon 16 Sabbath was so ill as to not preach at all 17 Monday rode in a chaise to Sunbury went on board a vessel to be carried out upon the Salts to which he had been advised by his Physician Friday returned home very ill, very little hopes of his ever preaching again entertained; by Himself or others[2] Page 46 is missing, but Rev. Osgood preached once in September and gave Sacrements once in November; the dates then jump to 1773 so it is not clear if those were the only two times he served in the pulpit or not.

Will 18 June 1773 of Rev. John Osgood names negro servants. Names Wife Mary (nee Andrew), Names John Andrew son of John Andrew, John Godfrey son of Hannah Godfrey Alexander, Susanna Andrew dau of Benjamin Andrew, Mary Bacon and ?Jaunder Andrew children of Joseph Andrews. Names nephew John Baker and Thomas Baker. Names John Osgood Harley son of John Harley. Sister in law Lydia Winn.

Codicil 27 Aug 1773. with names John Winn Sr., Benjamin Andrew, Parmanus Way, Thomas Baker. Docs also names John Mitchell. [3]

Research Notes

Read a Petition of the Revd John Osgood setting forth that he was possessed of forty Slaves in the province had had but Eleven hundred Acres of Land granted him. and being desirous of Obtaining an additional Quantity of Land for Cultivation Therefore praying for Two hundred Acres of Land within half a Mile of Land this day by him applied for near Jones's Cowpen, to be run Oblong RESOLVED That on Condition & the prayer of the said Petition is granted Read a Petition of the Revd John Osgood setting forth that he was possessed of Forty Slaves in the province and had but Eleven hundred Acres of Land and being desirous of Obtaining an additional Quantity o fLand for Cultivation Therefore praying for Two hundred Acres of Land on a Branch of the big Mortar Swamp near Jones's Cowpen to be run Oblong RESOLVED That on Condition & the prayer of the said Petition is granted[4]
