Important Notes (updated 23 Feb 2022)

Regarding Deborah Osgood, spouse of Asa Swan (1687-1766):

  • This Deborah (Osgood) Swan is easily confused with another contemporary Deborah (Osgood) Heard (1686-1723), likely a cousin, daughter of Thomas and Susannah (Lord) Osgood, who was born and lived in Ipswich, married (~1713) Edmund Heard, with whom she had several children, and died there August 23, 1723. Hence, Osgood-761 has been disconnected as a spouse of Asa Swan.
  • Deborah Osgood who became the wife of Asa Swan most likely was a daughter of Timothy Osgood (1658-1748) and Deborah (Poor) Osgood (1664-1724), however no birth record is yet evident. The will of Timothy Osgood who married Deborah Poor names his four Swan grandchildren, children of his daughter Deborah deceased, in his will. (Essex County, MA: Probate File Papers, 1638-1881.Online database. AmericanAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2014. Case 20282). The page on which the four children (one son and spouses of the three daughters) sign receipt of their inheritance can be seen here (through American Ancestors): https://www.americanancestors.org/databases/essex-county-ma-probate-file-papers-1638-1881/image/?volumeId=13789&pageName=20282:14&rId=30382386. This will includes bequests to his four Swan grandchildren: Asie, Phebe West, Deborah Gage, and Elizabeth Swan (the will written before Elizabeth's marriage). Hence, Osgood-428 and Osgood-1084 presumably represent the same person, thus should be merged, with the birth data in this profile prevailing at least until more sound data can be put into evidence. Notably, the Deborah Osgood who married Asa Swan, in 1717, probably was born before 1700.

The daughter Phebe of Asa and Deborah Swan married Isaac West -- which can also be demonstrated by probate records. [Evidence should be put forth to this profile to illustrate or provide a trace to such records.]

Osgood-847 and Osgood-428 appear to represent the same person because: Both represent the first wife of Asa Swan.

It is Deborah Osgood daughter of Timothy Osgood and Deborah Poor who married this Asa Swan. This can be established through probate records. The will of Timothy Osgood includes bequest to his four Swan grandchildren: Asa Swan, Deborah Gage, Phebe West, and Elizabeth Swan. What is not known is the date of birth of Deborah. I do not believe there is a birth record for her. Timothy Osgood and Deborah Poor married in 1689 so it is possible that Deborah was born in the 1690's.

Asa Swan had three wives:

1. Phebe Frye married in 1713

2. Deborah Osgood married in 1716/17 -- She died 30 Jan 1724/25 with age at given as question mark 33?

3. Lucy Austin married in 1734

Asa Swan did not marry the Deborah Osgood born in 1685. That is the Deborah who should be disconnected as a spouse for Asa.

If your post is accurate re. her parents and birth timeframe then this profile should be merged into the Osgood-428 profile, with the birth data in that profile prevailing after the merge.

Also, can you cite evidence re. the premise that Asa Swan married 3 times? So far as anyone has documented, there was no wife named Phebe Frye.

Although it may work to merge those two Deborahs, the birth date should be left as an estimate around 1690 to avoid the confusion of the birth date of 26 Feb 1685/86 which is the date of birth of Deborah daughter of Thomas and Susannah, This is the record for the marriage of Asa and Phebe Frye

Swan, Asa, and Pheobe Fry, Jan. 29, 1712-13.* Andover Vital Records; https://ma-vitalrecords.org/MA/Essex/Andover/Images/Andover_M322.shtml There are no known children for that marriage. I change the births for the two Deborahs to be merged to an estimate of 1690.

Ok, but I don't think you should just leave it at the 1690 estimate without providing copious notation into the bio about the 26 Feb 1686 date not being supportable. As it is, the resulting merged profile will be "blessed" with FAG conflict error messages every week, which the profile manager(s) will be left to deal with until the FAG post gets corrected (if ever). Not sure how many managers actually address those error messages (I always do), but you don't just want to lay it on them, or on other users of the Wikitree, without explanation. If you know the FAG page is wrong, which would not be surprising, then you probably should notify its manager in an attempt to upgrade it.

John,

I think the approach should be to get everything as accurate as possible, and since the 1685/6 birth is an error for this Deborah (and three years before the marriage of her parents), that should not be used. I did request that the Find a Grave information for Deborah Osgood Swan be changed to a birth of 1690.

The Find a Grave memorial has been changed to reflect the 1690 birth year.

Very good, & thank you for doing that. I've also recently edited the other two Deborah (Osgood) Sears and Heard bios to clarify the situation. Hopefully someday an authentic birth record on this Deborah will emerge.

This Deborah born in 1684 cannot be the child of Christopher Osgood who died in 1650 and Margaret Fowler who died in 1682.
