After the Battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775, Teunis volunteered for training in the Minute Man companies of Captain John DeWitt and Captain Simon Westfall under Colonel Peter Ten Brock in Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, New York. The following year, he joined the 3rd Albany militia regiment commanded by Colonel Phillip Schuyler. Although he was only a private, he performed the duties of orderly sergeant in companies under Captains Henry Ostrum, John Groat, and Jacob Lansing.
