Biography

Antonius was born on 21 Feb 1736 and Baptized on April 10, 1736 at Rhinebeck, Dutchess, New York. He married Elizabeth Proper in 1760. He died at the Battle of Bennington on August 16, 1777.

During the Revolution, Antonius left his family and made his way northward to join British forces under General Burgoyne. The attractions to Loyalism were many but among the biggest was the bounty offer of 200 acres of land and the prospect of ending the immense power of the patrons which tenant farmers had found onerous for decades.

With Antonius went two younger brothers, Petrus and Abraham, his brother-in-law, Peter Proper, and a cousin from Stillwater, John Ostrander. Sent with a detachment to acquire horses, wagons, and provisions in the Hoosick valley, Antonius and his compatriots were overwhelmed by unexpected opposition in the Battle of Bennington on August 16, 1777[1]. British documents listed Antonius as "Thunis Ostrander" with the notation "Killed at Bennington". His two brothers, brother-in-law, and cousin were taken prisoner.

After Antonius's death, Elizabeth took her six children to live in Livingston where she had grown up. She called herself Anna Proper, having been baptized as Anna Elizabeth Proper. She was soon hauled before the patroon-dominated Committee to Detect and Defeat Conspiracies Against the United States. She was dismissed after the committee received a letter from on of the Livingstons regarding her case. Both testimony and letter have been lost in history.
