Biography

Barbour's Loss Death and Funeral of Col. Ott

In the death of Col. Ed. S. Ott, Barbour county lost one of her noblest old citizens. His death occurred at 3 o'clock on Thursday afternoon at his residence. He was an old time Southern gentleman, distinguished for his native good, common sense, his genial hospitality, and his high-toned and spotless integrity. This writer knew Col. Ott well during and since the war, and never did he meet with a man of more generous nature or of more noble traits of character. In his manner and conversation, he was simple and unostentatious. He was free, frank, and candid, and in his convictions, there was no deception about him. He always meant just what he said, and his word was as good as his bond or his signature to any paper. His intrinsic worth as a man gave him a strong hold upon the affection and esteem of his neighbors, and those neighbors nominated and elected him to represent them in the State General Assembly. There, he wielded a strong influence on behalf of good government and his constituency. He became 69 years old on the 1st of January last. Many of his old Eufaula friends and acquaintances met the train carrying the remains at the depot when they arrived and escorted them to the Odd Fellows' cemetery where the last religious ceremonies were conducted by Rev. Dr. Loveless, pastor of the Eufaula Methodist Church. Thus, a good man and true man passed away. He had lived in Barbour county and on the place where he died for forty-two years. His memory will be cherished, ever fresh, and sweet be the flowers above his grave.
