Ludwig's father was Royal Court Cellerer (wine) for King Ludwig I. Ludwig was named for the king, who was also his godfather. He changed his name to Louis once in business in Virginia. The winery he began proved to be unsuccessful due to the cheaper European wines now being imported and becoming popular. Louis died in 1886 in Virginia and his burial is unknown.
