Biography

I was born at Lackland Air Force base, my Father was from Greenville, Tn, my mother from St John's, Newfoundland, I have first cousins from all four corners of N. America. Being an AF brat, I have lived in many states and most of my childhood in Nfld. when my father was stationed in Nfld. Pepperrell Air Force Base in St Johns and Harmon AFB in Stephenville , Nfld. When my father went to Japan we lived with my Grandmother from 18 months to 3 years old. again when I was in 3rd grade and 4th grade, 5th - 7th went to school on base at Harmon. When the base closed we were stationed in Dover Dl. where I met my former husband and moved to Iowa in 1970 where I still live. I have 4 children and 13 grandchildren and want to leave them a book of ancestors, for them to know where they come from. I have found that most of my ancestors have been in N. America from the early 1600"s. I am using this site in the hope to find 2 families who lived and died in Newfoundland. Ann Turner( 1850-1911) and John Kane (1838-1908), My Grandmother Anastasia Dunphy Kean told me that a grandparent (first gen)came from (born )Ireland,. I hope I can find them I was divorced from James J Koch 28 Mar 1997 we had 4 children, 1 daughter and 3 sons. Steve Zach is my life partner, not legally married, starting in 2002, living together from

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Mary or other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

Hi Mary!

I've removed the image https://www.wikitree.com/photo/jpg/Kean-931?title=Image:Kean-931.jpg from the profile of Mary Kean https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kean-931. There are a few reasons why we don't want to upload images of vital statistics registries: They can cause copyright issues for one, and when registries refer to multiple people, it can potentially lead to problems with lots of duplicate images being uploaded.

The best way to add sources to a profile (particularly from free, indexed sites like FamilySearch or FindAGrave) is to use the provided citation. They prominently have a "cite this record" with the url and record details that you can copy and paste.

There is some general documentation here:

and some specific to the Canada project here:

In fact, I'd recommend joining the Canada project, via the Trans Canada Trail to learn some of the cool tricks to sources and biographies at WikiTree:

Hi, Mary, just wanted to tell you, regarding your reply to me, that Gore and Crocker are names in my cousin Jean’s genealogy. I took over her profiles when she passed away in March, so probably Robert Crichton does not apply to me???? Regards, Lula

Hello Lula, Thank you for reaching out.

We are also Connected to Robert Crichton 1409-1494, my 14th great-grandfather of husband of 4th cousin 1x removed. I had traced the Tuttles before, from Gore and Dorcas Ann Crocker. I am obsessed with all the connections I have made, I have found cousin and ancestors I never would have known before WT Mary

From what I can see, our common ancestors begin at Johann Peter Ottinger (b. 1755) and Margaret Ditterman (b. 1763), but I'm particularly interested to see if you have any info on my later ancestors John Henry Ottinger (b. 1821) married to Margaret Rebecca Ottinger (b. 1825, evidently a cousin) who would of course not be in your direct line of descent.
posted by Brent Schaeffer Jr.
Thanks for the new note. I have Johann Peter's parents as Heinrich Ottinger (who could certainly be "Big Henry") and Elizabeth Susannah Neas, both born in 1793.

And it must have been something related to the Ancestry goof that gave me Henry B. Ottinger and Susannah Nehs as the parents of Rebecca. I've had that relationship listed as a big question mark for a couple years now.

posted by Brent Schaeffer Jr.
So it looks to me like we're fifth cousins descended from Henry B Ottinger and Margaret Detterman , and sixth cousins descended from Johannes Nehs and Elizabeth Rausch. There was a lot of intermixing in East Tennessee. Plus we're just three years apart, ourselves.

I appreciate the connection you initiated.

I have not had my DNA analyzed and am not sure I ever will.

Hi Mary,

Thanks for creating pre-1700 profiles like Agnes Christina (unknown) Baur (abt.1660-abt.1711), Elisha Hammer (abt.1700-abt.1798) and Elizabeth Unknown (abt.1700-abt.1798).

Per our community standards, pre-1700 profiles must be sourced to be created and Ancestry Trees are not sources in and of themselves, although they may contain sources.

Before making additional pre-1700 profiles, please go back to these two and add whatever sources you have to support their information. If you need help finding sources, the US Southern Colonies Project is a good starting point.

Thanks.

On Eleonora (unknown) Ottinger (1642-1692) I see this source information you added:
Eleonora Ottinger
BIRTH 1642 Switzerland DEATH 1692 (aged 49–50) Baden-Württemberg, Germany BURIAL Unknown MEMORIAL ID 23445538 · View Source
Wife of Gregorius Ottinger. Married in 1655 in Bergstrasses, Switzerland. Died in Elsenz, Germany. Children Anna Barbra, Friederieg, Margaretha, Hans, #Anna Elisabeth, Anna Maria.

But our sources are meant to help the next person retrace your steps. From what you wrote here, I'm at a loss of how to find the source information as it seems you included what the source said, but not what the source was. Please elaborate on where you got this information. Was it a book? A website? Give as much information as possible so another person could easily relocate the information you already found.

Thank you , I am new to this, and will study on how to do this going forward. I have become aware that other's tree are not always accurate.

I spent some time researching Eleonora (unknown) Ottinger (1642-1692) and was able to deduce that the source you supplied was a find-a-grave reference (that wasn't clear to me at first). I further discovered that the Find-a-Grave has no picture of the gravestone marker (which to count, needs dates and/or name on it, read more here), and therefore is not a sufficient reliable source by itself, but just another example of a tree on the web that may or may not be accurate. I was able to find one true source which I added and I also added sources for her husband. Please take a look at the updated profiles.

Did you know you can make a SuperKit on GEDmatch that combines your 23andMe and Ancestry DNA kits into one that contains the data from both? Each commercial DNA company picks different portions of your DNA to test, so combining is helpful.

Hello Mary,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

The Virginia or the Germany Project may fit your current research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

Remember to cite reliable sources in pre-1700 profiles you manage, or edit. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).
