Charles Otton was born about 1830 in Honiton, Devon, England. He was the son of Henry (Otton-103) and Jane Otton (Unknown-473199). In 1841 he was a servant at Coombe Hays Farm, Honiton, very near to Ivy House Cottage, his parents home. In 1851 he was an apprentice Cooper, living with his employer & wife, and another apprentice in Awliscombe, Devon (where his father was born). After his apprenticeship he moved to London, where he met his future wife Eliza Cock. They married on 7th December 1856 in the parish church of St Thomas in Southwark, London. They had about 12 children. In 1861 he was a cooper, living with his wife & baby son Charles Henry in Church Street, Bermondsey. In 1871 he was a cooper, living at 7 Dockhead (Red Lion), Bermondsey with his wife & children. The year before in 1870 he was the Licensed Victualler here, possibly helping out his sister-in-law, Emma Cock, who was listed as Licensed Victualler in 1871. In 1872 he was a mercantile clerk. In 1881 he was again a cooper, living with his wife & children in Knotts Green, Leyton, London. In 1891 and 1901 he continued as a cooper, living in Goldsmith Cottage, Knotts Green, Leyton with his wife and children. In 1911 he was a widower & retired warehouseman, living with 2 unmarried daughters, Emily & Clara & granddaughter Phyllis. He passed away on 16th December 1911 at 34 Woodriff Road, Leytonstone, London, England. He left £1,109 16s 7d to Walter John Otton, his oldest living son, who was a commercial traveller.
