Biography

Reverend William Spencer Owsley was born May 17, 1858, in Tazewell, Claiborne county, Tennessee, a son of John Owsley and Mary "Polly" Shearman. William is found on the United States Census of 1860, at the age of two, the youngest of seven children in the household. ^[1] William's maternal grandmother, Catharine Sherman, 82 years of age, and born in Virginia, is living with his family in 1870, in Grainger county, Tennessee. ^[2] William is 21 years of age and listed as a "Farm Laborer" in the home of his 68 year old parents, on the 1880 census of Grainger county, Tennessee. ^[3]

On the 1910 census, 51 year old William S. Owsley is back in Claiborne county, Tennessee, as head of household. His 72 year old sister, Martha (Owsley) Jessee is living with him, as is her son Steven Jessee, age 26. ^[4] In 1918, William married a much younger woman, Pauline L. "Peg" (umn) Burch who was a widow, with a daughter. ^[5] In 1920, William age 61 and Peg L. Ousley, age 31, are living in Claiborne county, Tennessee with Peg's 13 year old daughter, Etta Burch, living in the household. ^[6]

William Spencer Owsley died May 3, 1924, in Claiborne county, Tennessee, at the age of 66. His place of birth is listed as New Tazewell, Tennessee on his death certificate and his parents are listed as John Owsley and Polly Sherman. ^[7] William is buried in the Owsley Cemetery, in Sandlick, Claiborne county, Tennessee. ^[8]
