Biography

The Outlawe family had lived in Bishops Lynn and West Lynn for at least 200 years before Adam. Records include:

  • Laurence Outtlaw/Utlator of Len granted, sometime between 1200 and 1250, a 1d annual rent from land in Damgate held by Peter Strac to the Hospital of the Blessed Mary Magdalen of Len for the souls of his parents and his benefactors[1]
  • Adam Outlawe signed ordinances of the Guild of St John the Baptist in West Lynn in 1374.[2]
  • In 1384 John Outlawe, senior, received a grant of land in West Lynn "of five acres of land extending from the King's way, of old called "Satirday Damp" to the common goal to hold by service of a silver penny." - 8 June 1384 [3]
  • Thomas Outlawe purchased the right of a little ferry boat for 13s 4d from the Guild of Corpus Christi in 1399.[4]
  • John, son of Richard Outlawe was conferred the freedom of the Borough of Kings Lynn (the called Bishop's Lynn) in 1456.[4]

Adam Outlawe, chaplain of West Lynn, granted a feoffment to John Dawson of Northlenn, chaplain, in 1481 of 60 acres of land belonging to the chantry founded by Thomas de Acre.[5]

Sir Adam Outlawe was priest of West Lenne in 1501 when the chantry founded by Thomas de Acre was left in patronage of the parish, which the priset bequeathed to the "bell town".[4]

Adam Outlawe's will was dated 1503, when he was described as Sir Adam Outlawe, priest of Westlen St Peter. Note the honorific "sir" was used as an abbreviation of "monseigneur" for priests, in addition to the current usage for knights.[6]
