Biography

William Ovens was born in Scotland on April 3, 1835. He was the son of Walter Ovens and Isabella Patons, both born in Scotland.[1] He married Ann Douglas Rodger in Morebattle, Roxburghshire, Scotland, United Kingdom on 8 June 1866.[2][3] William and Ann had at least six children.

In about 1868, William and Ann moved to Canada. This estimate is based on the birth year of their eldest known child. Wm Ovens appeared in the 1871 Census of Canada at Minto Township, Wellington County, Ontario. He was listed as head of household, a 35 year old farmer born in Scotland of Scottish descent. He was living with his wife Ann and his daughters Margaret and Isabella.[4]

In the Canada Census 1881 at Minto Township, William Ovens was listed as 45 years old and born in Scotland. He was living with his wife and their children: Maggie D, Isibella, Walter, Mary Ann and James.[5]

William Ovens appeared in the 1891 Census of Canada at Minto as 55 years old, born in Scotland, his parents born in Scotland. It was noted that he was able to read and write, and was living with his wife and their children: Margaret, Walter, Mary, James and Cristie.[6]

In the 1901 Census of Canada at Minto, William Ovens was recored as 66 years old, born in Scotland in 1834. His year of immigration was noted as 1865. He was living with his wife and their children James and Catherine.[7]

Ann Rodger Ovens died on 24 December 1907 in Minto.[8]

William Ovens went to live with his daughter Mary Ann Butler in Harriston, Wellington Couny after his wife died, where he was found in the household of his son in law, Walter Butler for the 1911 Canada Census. He was recorded, as 76 years old, born in Scotland in April of 1836. His year of immigration this time was noted as 1867. He was living with his daughter, son in law and his grand children Euphenia, Annie Bell, Catherine A. and Wm Alex.[9]

William Ovens died 25 December 1912 in Harriston.[1] He is buried with his wife Ann at Harriston Cemetery.[10]
