Walter Ovens was born in Minto, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada, on 14 June 1873. He was a son of William Ovens and Ann Douglas Rodger.[1] Both of his parents were born in Scotland. He married Jane "Jenny" Elizabeth Bolton in Harriston, Wellington County on 17 January 1894. The witnesses were Mary Dowling and Mary Brown, both of Harriston.[2] Walter and Elizabeth had at least one child.
Walter Ovens appeared for the first time in the Canada Census 1881 at Minto Township in the household of his father. He was listed as 7 years old, born in Ontario of Scottish descent and attending school. He was living with his parents and his siblings Maggie D., Isibella, Mary Ann and James.[3]
In the 1891 Canada Census at Minto, Walter Ovens was listed in the household of his father as 17 years old, born in Ontario of Scottish descent, and able to read and write. He was living with his parents and his siblings Margaret, Mary, James and Cristie.[4]
Walter Ovens died 13 April 1945 in Toronto, Ontario. On his death certificate it was recorded he had been a farmer his whole life, and had been living in Minto up until his death. The informant was noted as Walter's son Jos. Ovens, from Toronto.[5] Walter Ovens is buried with his wife Jane Bolton Ovens at Harriston Cemetery, Harriston, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada.[6]
Walter Ovens (1873-1945) was my grandfather. The informat on Walter's death certificate was James Ovens his son. Walter had 5 children by Elizabeth Bolton: William Ovens (1894-1955), (he was my father) Married Luella Ovens born Cutting (1908-1995), married 8 December 1930 Norfolk United Church Guelph, Ontario; Nettie May Shirran born Ovens (3 January 1897) married George Shirran (1889-1949): Annie Ovens (1901-1991) married first Thomas Charles Orton McLelland (1895-1939) Married 25 November 1925, Palmerston Minto Wellington Ontario. Secondly Annie married Archibald Darroch (1902-1990), married 24 May 1947, St. Catherines Lincoln county, Ontario, Canada; James Ovens (1903-1962) married Ivy May Windatt (1912-1981) 21 September 1947 at Wycliffe College Chapel, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Walter Ovens (1907-1973) married Mary Elizabeth Arbuckle (1912-2009).
