John was born in 1854. He married Wilhelmina (a.k.a. Minnie) Wenzel in 1878 and had two children, Laura and Henry (a.k.a. Elmer). He worked in Marshalltown, Iowa as a shipping foreman for a glucose factory, as well as a firefighter for the Anson Hose Company. Tragedy struck in July of 1889 when John drowned in the Iowa River at the age of 36.
