He was a Rifleman with the 3rd Reinforcements, 2nd Battalion, F Company of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. Private Overend died of wounds on 9 June 1916 in France, serving with the Wellington Infantry Regiment, 2nd Battalion . He is buried at Cite Bonjean Military Cemetery, Armentieres, France (Grave reference II. A. 38)
