Rupert was my Maternal Grandfather Rupert was innoculated at age 2, and the innoculation caused an infection resulting in foot amputation. He was a well regarded gardener, famed for creating both Edmonds Sure to Rise Factory gardens, and Sir Heaton Rhodes "Otahuna" celebrated gardens.
Background to above....unproven but family knowledge (refer Luckett family notes) Ann, his mother, lived at age 10, (info from1871 census records), with William East as a domestic servant. After she came to NZ she offered T.J Edmonds (Edmonds "sure to rise") the recipe for the baking powder used on the William East farm, in return for her son Rupert to be given a job in the factory. Soon after Rupert was asked if he had any gardening knowledge, and moved to become the Gardner. He set out the well known grounds of the factory, won awards, and maintained them for a number of years. Gordon-7688
