Biography

"Born in Polo, Illinois, Katie was three months old when she and her family departed their home for a four and one-half month trip, by covered wagon, to Stockton, California, on April 27, 1864. (Katie's father Peter was an itinerent Preacher/Pastor of the Church of the Brethren and the family moved several times throughout Katie's childhood.) In 1866, due to a great deal of homesickness on the part of her mother Hannah, they boarded a ship headed south and returned to Ephrata, Pennsylvania. They sailed to and crossed the Isthmus of Panama on foot, then boarded another ship and sailed north. The family visited in Ephrata for six months, returned to Polo for one month then moved to Kingston, Missouri for a 6 year stay." 1 "The family's next move took them to Myrtle Point, Oregon where they stayed for twelve years. Their last journey began with a sailing to San Francisco, California and a horse and wagon from San Francisco to Lathrop, California (an area near Sacramento) for a lengthy visit with relatives. Following the visit, they travelled via horse and wagon to Lemon (now Walnut), California." 2 In 1882, while in Myrtle Point, 18 year old Katie married Smith Barnes Lewellen. Katie had two daughters with Lewellen, Eva and Elsie. Eva died very young, in Lemon, and Smith passed away shortly thereafter. Both Eva and Smith were first buried in the Spadra Cemetery. Later, both bodies were moved to the Pomona Cemetery when it was developed and are located there now, Space 1, in Lot 133.

A widow of 2 1/2 years and Elsie to care for, Katie married Perry Calvin Bashore, a neighbor of the Overholtzer family, on February 10, 1889 in the Covina Church of the Brethren. Katie and Perry had four children together.

Katie died in the family home December 28, 1942 and is buried at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, California.
